Hello all,

I'm planning on a downwinder at 7 mile beach (NSW) on either the Sat or Sunday of the Easter weekend.

This will be my first downwinder so I'm approaching it with more caution than an average day out. Any advice or tips about 7 mile beach (other than it's length!)? Anything to look out for?

I'll be on a twin tip and will take my 12 and 9m kites and use as appropriate depending on the wind. I was thinking of taking some cash should I need to bail, and a little rucksack with thongs and an ikea bag for the kite (if I need to hitch!). Is there anything else I might need for an aborted downwinder?

Oh, and would anyone like to join me?!

Actually I might want to.

I'm currently in Victoria at the moment for work, but I'll be going back home just for the long weekend.

7Mile beach is my local (I live in Gerringong usually), so it will be nice to do a downwinder there with someone else - practice for when I want to do it by myself.

It would be hard to bail and hitchhike back once you get going, because it is very hard to access the main road from the majority of 7Mile beach. It would be a long walk along the sand. Only places (that I know of) where you have access to the road would be Gerroa, 7Mile beach carpark (about 2kms from Gerroa), then Shoalhaven Heads.

PS: No need for a bailout plan. That's what a patient girlfriend with a car is for. We would just have to make it to a road.

G'day Zarb,

the girlfriend part is not a problem, but a *patient* girlfriend, now that's where I struggle... ;-)

Hmm, looking at Google maps in satellite mode, looks like the road access are few and far between. Seems like if you're going to bail, either right at the beginning or right at the end...

Anyway, I'll PM you to arrange!

Ive done Gerroa to Shoalhaven Heads quite a few times. It normally takes around 2 hrs.Noreaster is very cross- off at gerroa to cross-on at the heads.I found the best section to be just north of Berry beach which is about half way. From Berry beach south to Shoalhaven Heads the waves can get a little bit gnarly as the beach has a deep gutter in close and there are some very shallow sandbanks out the back. There is a track that goes from beach to main road half way between Berry Beach and Shoalhaven Heads ,mainly used by fisherman.I wouldnt mind joining in if wind is good.

Also if a bail out is needed the northern half has a fire trail running parralel to the beach. No car access but better then walking upwind along the beach.

I should be round if the wind is on...

I'm thinking about doing Smoky Cape to Hat head at Easter. I'll have the girlfriend drive along the beach following me - It's a 15km long beach with a great campsite up at the northern end.

I have no idea why you aren't allowed to dive on any beaches south of Newcastle (apart from BH), like 7 mile beach. makes no sense.

Thanks for the advice all and positivity.

As my first downwinder, I'm realllllly excited at the prospect of having all that open water to play with. Fingers crossed for the wind.

I'll confirm which day I'm thinking of going closer the time (Driving up from Melbourne on the thurs/friday)...

Cheers.

Thanks Zarb, can you (or anyone) recommend a good website for checking the weather down there? I couldn't see it on seabreeze (but I'm sure it's there somewhere).

10 day forecast on weatherzone has an ECL forming off North coast on Sunday,if it holds true then we will most likely have a southerly pattern over easter.Perhaps Shoalhaven Heads to Gerroa might be possible if the wind is from the south.

Thanks TB,

can you suggest a meeting place if its a southerly and another one for a Northerly? Your local knowledge would be appreciated!

Shoaly heads surf club and Gerroa beach main carpark (s side of bridge) are the best spots to meet. A southerly would be gold!

It is well known that south winds are not so popular in the Shoalhaven delta. NE winds are a different situation.

So, it seems a late (small) chance on Saturday for NE, but the ECL holds the balance for the rest of the weekend.

Thanks Tony.

Does the whole ECL thing mean that Sunday is a no go?

Thanks.
