Hey folks. I've just moved to Sydney and went for a quick look at Dolls Point today. Is this still a kitable location? Any particular rules/regs for where it's allowed/not, or where you can/can't rig up?

Hey Bonk, welcome to Syd~ it's gets super busy with families On the sand at Dolls on a hot day in summer, and Its a bottle neck for boats coming through this channel compared to the bay. This also makes the current quite strong on the in and out going tides to the point where it can really help to stay up wind on an out going tide in NE wind, or send you down wind with an incoming tide in NE.

It's all still kiteable as CJ said, but it's only getting busier so we've been put on notice at various times for kites crashing near people or kiters pushing right-of-way too hard with power boats or sailing races. So best to keep wide where possible.

The spots banned in Botany are around the airport, Kurnell estuary, and Port Botany shipping area.
I think Kiting NSW has a map of this.
Syd harbour is all banned. Eastern beaches also no go. Northern beaches and Cronulla are go.

most people prefer central Brighton Le Sands cos there is more car parking and we kind of take over a spot where beach goers can see its full of kites.

Over the past couple of years, Dolls Point has gone through a transformation due to coastal erosion. Where there was once 50m of beach to the waters edge there is now water lapping at the sea wall on low tide. Backwash has made it really choppy in close and the launching area is so far back on a nor'easter that it is unsafe to launch. Beachgoers fill most of the beach now too and fishermen occupy the corner in the smooth water zone up against the groyne.

fishermen are my nemesis. why would you eat anything caught in botany bay?

Hey Kit33r, have you seen Dolls recently. Dropped in last week to find it fenced and the local council pumping the sand north to Ramsgate - beach nourishment they call it. The beach is completely destroyed now... Plenty of sand off the point causing a navigation hazard they could have dredged, but of course the council just chose the cheap option. A great spot for kiting and the local beach goers now gone!

Yes, it's pretty much unkitable now. Mind you, I've been out in a southerly but fencing is an issue. In a NEer you could launch further north and venture south to Dolls to enjoy the flat water behind the groyne but it seems no one does this. I'll check it out on the foil soon.

Can someone take pix please for all to see . This is environmental sabotage / vandalism...This kitespot is a perfect city kiting location...50mtr walk from car..100mtr to greek kiosk,restaurant...1klm to world famous kiteshop and 4 klm to Sydney airport.. Venue for a successful Oz titles a few years . Why isn't there a community uproar and protest ?

Is an areal shot of how small Ramsgate was getting due to erosion from the changing of currents caused by dredging of Port Botany. It is scheduled to be completed by December 2019 and the fence will come down then.
More sand at Ramsgate= more people swimming there instead of Dolls and Lady Robinson's Beach where we can kite, so that's a good thing isn't it?
its bad that the erosion problems happened to start with, but the nourishment will be done soon.

the place where they are sourcing the sand is where the mouth of the George's River is filling up with sand, so they're not taking it away from Dolls Point.

we should definitely be involved in preventing a new cruise ship terminal in Botany which will bring more dredging, more current changes, more erosion, sea bed crud from the industrial days floating over to the beach into our faces

Mate I was a local at Dolls point a few years back. It was prized for the flat water behind the breakwall and easy access to Towra. Kooks were too afraid to kite there and everyone knew each other. That was back in 2015/16. Now the beach is gone, and it's just full of hoons on Lebanese dirt bikes (jetskis). I have ventured back a few times, but it's not the same as what it used to be. If you are keen i'll come down for a cruise. There aren't really any rules, just be aware of other kites and traffic on the water.
