When are you kitesurfers going to realize that Nobby's is not the place for you. Im going to start a Petition to have kite surfing banned from Nobby's.
The precedent for banning kitesurfing has already been set at Bondi and other Sydney beaches.
Do you know a better place?
If you are a windsurfer, what would you do if the council banned all sail craft?
(I see from your other post you have no positive contributions to make!)
If you are another beach user read on!
You can't really compare the top end of Nobby's to Bondi.
Bondi is packed with people all the time and it is just common sense that many activities not be allowed with so many people about, I think even ball sports have been banned.
Compared to those that use the area near the surf club prior to kitsurfing taking place at the top end of Nobby's a decade ago relatively few people ventured to that area of the beach on a windy day when the white caps covered the ocean, infact I would say the activity of kitesurfing itself actually attracts an equal number of people to that end of the beach as it is itself a reason to go for a walk as they are intrigued by the sport and the colour and use of a big kite to propel a person along in a quite and peaceful way and yet seam to require all the strength and stamina of an elite athlete to perform.
If you believe in everybody having a right to perform their chosen activity why would you want to see so many people banned from enjoying a healthy lifestyle, giving themselves little personal challenges to improve and succeed and have very little impact on the environment and forget about the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Just like many other activities such as tennis, basket ball, skate boarding, bicycle riding, soccer, football, model aero planes, golf, dancing or even kids play grounds, they all have designated areas for these activities.
As these activities are very old and some are hundreds of years old the general public is well aware of the dangers and risks and we know not to park the car to close to a footy game or else a ball might end up on the roof of the car and we know not to enter an area used for model aeroplanes and we know to keep an eye on the kids when walking along a bike track and we certainly know not to go play frisbee with the kids at the local playing field while there is a cricket match on.
Of all the many kilometres of beaches between Nora Head and Nelsons Bay there is probly only about 1.5 kilometres that us kitesurfers and windsurfers tend to use, these probly only number about 7 locations which is not that many really for Australia's 6th biggest city which is world famous for it's many great beaches, thanks to champions of the wave like Mark Richards.
As most of our councils seam to be on a push to promote a healthy life style within their boundaries to entice others to take up residence in their great cities I am sure that if the councils are made aware of some facts they would most likely erect signs advising other beach users of the activities performed in these areas.
As our sport is relatively new, infact it has only been done by the general public for about 11 year in Australia, this would greatly help us to educate the greater public in what our sport is all about and explain to them the reasons not to stand so close and watch the spills and thrills this great sport has to offer for it's supporters.
It just so happens that Nobby's is a relatively safe beach for a learner as the big swell does not hit the beach directly as the reef stops a lot of it. And this would be another reason for councils not to ban the sport at the top end of nobys as it could potentially force learners to take their chances at another beach which may have many other users and most likely has more risks for a learner and they may get into difficulty in the rough surf.
So if you are walking up that way again on day that is windy (we haven't had many lately) may I suggest you give the kitesurfers a wide birth (the beach is plenty wide enough to walk around) rather than to close and put yourself in danger should something go wrong with a kite that is in the air.
And may we all enjoy the days we have left till we are 6 feet under , we are not here very long
