Sorry to troll in here, but I am doing a trip to Sydney in the following month and wanted to know if it's relatively safe to kite in kite designated areas of Sydney, or do I have to go way out of town? I am more concerned about all your high cliffs, for wind up-drafts, lofting, etc. Thanks in advance

Manly beach warning. Advanced locals do LATE EVENING AFTER THE FLAGS ARE DOWN kite here as we know when to go out and more importantly when not. But recently backpackers are turning up with no idea of the hazards. They must be told on ALL forums to go elsewhere. Manly is only for locals who know the place. This is not being a rude 'locals only" post but a real plea. it's too dangerous and risky. One more idiot in the flags, rides thorugh the surf schools, lands on the corso or road, drops their kite on the volley ball games, snags a kid on the beach, a fisherman, upsets the real local surfers, and it's all over. Manly is gusty, can swing off shore fast, rocks will greet you if you drop / lose your kite, and strong rips with the very small beach launching full of holes.

^^ CJ, it's all about the Sydney Basin. The northern beaches have a high escarpment right behind them and it blocks the chance of a circulation forming. Within the Sydney Basin we have the flat western suburbs which, in summer, get bloody hot and as you know hot air rises. The mountains to the west of this trap the heat in. The rising hot air sucks in cool ocean air to replace it. The sea breeze comes in around 1-2 o'clock after the inland has had sufficient time heat up. It's all about a temperature differential. If the ocean is too warm it may not happen.
