Hi all

My brother lives in Yamba and is thinking of taking a couple of kiting lessons in Iluka. Willyweather's wind statistics shows it's fairly light during the summer and then picks up with an SE. Can someone on the ground give me a run down on what the area is like to kite?

Cheers

google maps is your friend mate, and I am from up that way a little bit north of Yamba.

It's great in summer with the N/NE winds on all the open beaches, but S winds are a different story due to the lack of large, wide bays and inlets that are typical of the coastal areas further south in nsw. In my experience around that area there aren't many good flat water spots for S or SE wind. I have kited some of the rivers up there in S winds (richmond river at ballina), but the wind is very gusty. Generally in these wind directions you'll be in the surf which might not be ideal for a beginner, because the S wind usually brings with large swell.

My advice would be to tell your bro to get the most out of the remaining NE seabreezes, and then after that plan a few day trips either north or south to more beginner friendly spots if he doesnt wanna/cant kite in the surf yet in the S wind and large swell.
