Heading up to Taree next week end. Pretty sure I've heard old bar is a good spot.
Anyone with some info?

Awesome spot for flatwater in the lagoon, works in a NE wind just do a google search for "kiteboard muddies" and that should give you all the info about where to pump up and info about the local wildlife preserve.

Was it any good? A mate drove past the other day and said the river mouth had dried out and closed away from the sea

I went down and had a look. Must be like you say because couldn't see how you could kite there. Looking from the south it looked like the lagoon had silted up. Nice spot for seagulls.
