Been lurking around here for past few weeks so thought I'd register and say hello!

Decided this is the year I'm getting into kiteboarding. Got a loan of a 2.5m imp trainer and have put in about 6+ hours so far in the last week or two (you might have seen me on the beach at Brighton-le-sands the past few days). Going wake boarding this weekend to see can I transfer my snowboarding skills to the water, then maybe get my first kiteboarding lesson in a week or two. Any recommendations for good lessons, probably around botany bay?

Also, is it worth investing in a kite now that its coming into autumn? It'll be at least another month or 6 weeks before I have enough lessons + trainer experience to consider buying one, just wondering is there a "season" in kiteboarding in Sydney, or is it good for most of the year?

Thanks!

There is definitely a season. NE seabreezes tend to die off in March, with only the odd few in April. After that it's either southerlies that blow in with cold fronts or warm NW winds that are usually gusty.

I would still buy a kite at this time of year (well, I just did anyway). There seems to be quite a few 2013 models going for good rates at the moment.

Yep. Well said.
Most directions are kiteable somewhere. Just stay away from the NW. They are usually nasty.

I find that as a beginner the conditions in which you can kite avre VERY limited. Hence, for a newbee, most directions are not kitable somewhere in Sydney. Only N to NE, and S to SSE on botany bay (Doll's point and Brighton, I cannot speak for Kurnell, I've never been there).

* On any given kite, newbees (like me) have a smaller wind range than an intermediate rider. Where other may have an 11m up, I may hardly handle my 8.
* Cross-shore or cross-onshore winds only. Better kiters can go out with onshore winds but not me.
* I cannot go upwind in most conditions, so I need a place where I can do the walk of shame
* I feel like I need to stay close to the beach, wich is always the most crowded environment with other kiters, swimmers, fishermen...

Basically, I feel like botany bay is the only place to learn in Sydney, and it is very crowded on the weekends. The north shore are very wavy, although I've heard some people managed to lean there.

So first, get lessons. Your instructor will be able to help you with gear choice, although you should ask for second opinion as well. Witout a kite, there is no kitesurfing so you will have to get gear at one point. I chose to study the market and buy multiple kites second hands as opposed to one new kite (but don't buy without knowing and don't take my word for it, ask other kiters). I shreded one kite and was glad i did not pay $1600 for it.

Good luck

Thanks for the heads up guys. Have another trip to the wakeboarding park this weekend, so probably booking my first kitesurfing lesson next weekend!(wind permitting).

So when does the season start again then? September maybe?

You can kite all year round from Botany up to Nobby's Head at Newcastle quite safely.
Pm me and I will send a list locations and wind directions.
