I'm confused by all of the brands and models, had some lessons and ready to buy my 1st lot of gear. I'm 90kgs, I've had 12 m recommended and board about 140. i like the look of the Naish ride, but I'm just not sure? Different shops pushing their own brands. So what would you recommend for a 63 yo that just wants to go fast, maybe do a few little jumps and even get a surfboard so I can do downwinders along the beach once Im proficient. I don't want to buy secondhan, just looking at new. Thanks.

just make sure its one of the top 5 brands free ride kites and free ride boards. just google cabrinha ozone north naish slingshot (in that order honestly) and look at theyre freeride gear and what the windranges are for kite (dont forget to calculate your weight (most kites are made for 75-80kg riders so youll be adding on a square meter of canopy or 2) also with your height because your so old and a beginer go a freeride board thats possibly a couple cm bigger then reccomended.... so instead of 135cm get a 138cm (i think 140 is way to big stick to 136-138)

enjoy doing your homework.

also if you buy a "unused last years kite/board" youll save plenty of money and no downside or side effects.

+1 for what Kozzie said, the second hand board is a great idea because everyone loses their first board.
also throw a Core xr9 or 10 into the mix, it's the most expensive kite you'll look at, but the technology is quite simply superior.
But honestly, just buy gear from whichever shop is close to your house and offers a reasonable price.
supporting your local not only keeps them in business
but it gives you a reliable source of information
unlike these forums, which are mostly full of biased opinions and trolls.
welcome to the sport

63 years old fast/ jumps, good on you , but
I'd recommend joining st johns ambulance cover

Your instructor IMHO would be worth asking,
If you've learnt on brand x then buy brand x,
Was your tutor shop based or lessons only,
Naturally if the latter they'd want to sell x, doesn't mean that brand x is a bad kite, I'd ask the tutor as he/ she has more idea than us

LOL, I might be old but I look it....

Don't worry I'm already falling apart, surfed for just over 50 years and boy am I tired.

Thanks everyone for the advice, my instructor recommends the Ozone Enduro as that's what their shop sells. It works out about $450 more expensive than the Naish Ride Package, both packages come with 2015 boards. I will research all the brands Kozzie mentioned and try and form my own opinion. Definitely want to buy from a local shop, so thanks again for the help.

Your right, after doing a bit of research today I found the Catalyst and I actually emailed him and asked why they never recommended it. Haven't heard back yet.

Enduro is marketed as more of a intermediate kite. IMO you'll have more fun on the catalyst, Ride, or Airush DNA. I've got a mate who swears by the catalyst and Ozone Zepher in light winds.

ill answer that for you. because they have a enduro in your size and stock

also stops you from buying LAST YEARS catalyst as there was no enduro last year :)

when you sign up to be a retailer/distributor you basicly gotto sell x amount of kites a year. so they push theyre new stock for not just monetary reasons.

still get a 2015 catalyst. trust your research. i have had many many many older kitesurf students some much older then you grasshopper and i really find they are very content with just a catalyst.

what it is is a longer chord length (fatter kite) and nice gradual curved wintips. so the steering is nice grual and smooth.

if the kid still pushes for a enduro just say listen here squirt, cant you see im old? and im new to this sport? just let me have the easiest kite available to me. (the caty)

anyways hope that helps. stability in the air while your dicking around trying to put your board on will pay off more then the more height youll gain kitelooping it :)

oh and for record im not afiliated with any kitesurfing companys at all. i just know which kites my students over the years progress more on and why.

Thanks everyone, I've brought the ozone catalyst 12m and best spin 142. some say I might regret buying the bigger board, but I just want easy to begin with. Anyway I'm sure I'll have some fun and swallow a lot more salt water..

Good decision
The bigger board will be good to learn on as it will compensate for technique errors, once you are shredding it can become your light wind board ,win win

great choice of kite, bad choice on board.

as the guy above said itll become your lightwind board.... and youll be taking it to your grave my friend. no ones going to be buying a 2nd hand 142 board, shes unsellable

you would of been much better off getting a 138! MAAAAYBE 140...... but seriously 138 given your attitude to it being "easier" would of been the far extremity of that limit. but who cares you bought the correct kite and thats all that really matters.

your probably going to have a little brain fart try not to go kiting after work or any stressfull situation for your first 50 or so sessions make sure your relatively calm and relaxed just go thru the procedures your instructor taught you and youll be kiteing for years to come. with any sport your kind of at the period where its do r die time where you know enough to be dangerous and all that so just be calm and cool and think about what your doing, i even avoid coffee before any nervous sporting situations just try avoid anything thatll kick that adrenalin in. all the best and good luck mate
