Yes, I'm raising that old chestnut again; however it's specific this time.

OK, it's crunch time, I'm about to purchase my first kite, I'm pretty much sold on the Best 2010 Waroo.

The only thing I have to do is decide between the 9m & 11m.

With my weight of 92kg, which would be the most suitable size to use over the summer months in Perth?

Now, I've had my lessons & never used anything over a 9m, usually smaller & those sizes really seemed to be quite powerful to me, so even though I've seen people recommending 11-12m kites for someone my weight, I'm really not sure if those sizes are right to use.

Note; most of my kiting will be after work during the week, usually the seabreeze is stronger around that time of day, so which size Waroo would be the most suitable for those conditions?

I'm leaning towards the 11m, as I feel I'll be able to get out on lighter wind days to gain experience handling the kite, but I don't want to be over powered if the seabreeze is up like on the days like when I had my lessons & the wind was 22knots +

Ahhh, I'm going crazy trying to decide, I hope somone can help ease my mind.

P.S.- I've had my lessons, but I'm not really confident enough to demo gear, as I only just started getting up on the board & don't want to demo a kite to keep crashing it onto the water.

cheers.

At 92kg for 80% of the time during summer the 11m will be the perfect kite for you in your first full season.
As you become a more effecient kiter you may be able to drop a metre or so for your second season.
But unless you loose 6-8 kg (get to about 85 or less) the 9m will only work at above 25-27 knots for you.

I'm a bit bigger than you and though I can't comment specifically on the waroo, my 10m Rebel is good for 17-27knots at my weight. You're never going to have a true one kite quiver but I reckon the 9 would be your best bet for summer. It's really a matter of preference. If you don't mind being overpowered a bit, go with the 11, if you don't mind really having to work the kite on a lighter day, get the 9.

Now that i read that, I'm not sure if it was helpful at all. Good luck man.

I would be leaning towards the 9. One bonus the 9mtr has over the 11 is that its faster, with the ability to generate power through its speed.

Also the Waroo is delta kite and like most Delta's they have a lot of raw power. Im 100kg and have ridden the 7 Waroo 2010 in 20-25knots on a 135. Its possible with these kites for sure.

I think the 11 would be too big on the windy days and would leave you sitting on the beach watching, at least with the 9 you could opt to ride a larger board or a surfboard and still be out having fun.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the advice.

Ideally a couple of kites is the way I'd like to go, but I need to start with one, otherwise my missus will kill me (yeah yeah, sounds of whips cracking etc ), that's why the first choice has been so hard for me to make.

The plan is to continue getting the weight off, 92kg is not my idea weight, so all going well I think the 9m with a couple of boards will be the way to go first off.

Cheers!

Oceanfire, if you're gonna lose a little weight the 9m is definitely the go. As for boards, it may be economical and speed your learning curve to start on a larger flatter board that will get you going and upwind easier, and which you retain as your light wind board. Then, when you're confident staying upwind and want something more agile and controllable as you start to jump and go faster on the windy days, test a few smaller boards, probably with a bit more curve, both in rocker and outline.

Two boards and a 9m will give you a big range, for less money than two kites and one board.

Sounds good djdojo, I was thinking of around a 140x42 size board to start.

Yeah, 85kg or less is quite acheiveable for me, I'm on my way down from where I was, just plateaued at 92kg for a bit due to laziness. damn office jobs!

I had a 2009 9mt waroo , then just recently 2010 9mt & 11mt waroos. I weigh 72kgs. Found they didn't really get going for me on a TT till mid range on the waroo manual chart which is based on rider weight of 75kgs.. Also they are quite technical to set up rigging if you are only beginner , lower intermediate if using 2009 Best Bar. The redline performance bar is meant to be the preferred bar for 2010 waroos. Check out the Best Website for reviews ,etc... I have switched to the latest Kahoonas for upcoming season with newly released 2010 Redline Performance bar , so will be interesting to compare.

Nah, it's all good, thanks for the advice

I'm a quick learner, so the rigging doesn't phase me, I understand trimming etc

Hi Oceanfire,
I'm about 83kgs and have a 9m 2010 & 11m 2008 Waroo on a 133 board.
I would say I used them equally last summer but if I had to have only one I would choose the 11m.
I had that one buy itself for 2 seasons and was very rarely sitting on the beach when it was too strong (They have pretty good depower).
Plus I was out before all my mates that only had 9's
It might be a good idea to check out what size kites other guys your size are flying @ your local spot

Hi Crossfire
I am 80-85kg (summer /winter wieght) and i have a Griffin Argo 10m.
My Mate havs the 9m Argo and I get to use both all the time.
This was my first full season and for the FUN Factor/advancing skills I would go the bigger kite.
The 2010 kites have great depower systems so the range of the kite will still be OK.
I found I could "park" the kite more and work on skills with the board, carving, jumping(not pretty) and general transitions etc. Also I spent a lot of the time in the river or esturary so the wind speed is down a little compared to woodies and other ocean spots.
One thing i would check out is the board. I spashed out and got a 2010 High end board and found it fantastic. I got a 134 x 42. The widith makes it easy to get going, forgiving and soft with landings but still out-turns me and scares the bejesus out of me every now and then.
I love this sport and the 10m and the 134 x 42 gives me a great wind range and so much FUN regardless of the conditions
Good Luck

G'day Moons, Allano,

Cheers for the feedback, much appreciated; sorry I missed these replies earlier, damn work keeping me too busy.

Anyway, I'm off on Kitesurfari next week ; 4 days of solid kiting will give me some good experience to better know what I'm after.

Can't wait! It's gonna be sweet!

talk to dave at Choice in Hamilton Hill, he will help.
I learnt on 9m waroo and just found it good just a bit slow in lighter stuff(sometimes good because you dont get punished for mistakes when its pumping), mine was 07 so hopefully theve gotten quicker. the 11m will be slower again if they havent picked up the speed.
Be patient try both before you buy.
For your weight(im 80kg) i would go the 11 if your not keen on trying gear, they wont care if you try them
I spent ages deciding and (went mad)honestly dont think for 1st year it will matter unless you buy something thats far to quick, Best is good kite and mine was strong as.
Changed kites after about 1.5 seasons anyway, natural proggression.
Good luck and hope the trip was good

Thanks again everyone for the advice, just a quick update.

The trip on the Kitesufari was great, I put a post up in the general forum if you haven't seen it.

As it relates to my quest for a good kite size;
As with everything, it is experience that counts and having the recent 4 days of solid kiting that I did, was invaluable- it was a massive confidence booster.
I started off with 8m Cabrinha Switchblade 2010 & when my confidence was up, it was blowing a gale so I wasn't sure how I'd go with the bigger kite, I made the change to a 10m Cabrinha Switchblade 2010.
The 10m was not a problem at all; it was a lot of fun, I didn't have any problem controlling it at all & was using it fully powered the whole time.

So now I'm actually leaning towards getting a kite in the 10-12m range & two boards, one smaller for when the wind picks up a lot.

What do you guys reckon, surely that's the same as getting a smaller kite & two boards, one bigger for when the wind is light?

9 or 10...

10 if you haven't been riding that long.. 9 if your pulling jumps, looping competently and know how to ride

It depends on the wind and you really...12 in perth I think is going to be overkill...
