For a beginner I'd steer away from it. If it was a 2013 or 2014 Rally I'd say ok. But the 2011 Rallys were one of the fastest turning kites I've ever owned and flown, which is why some wave kiters liked them (although they don't drift very well IMO), and being fast turning makes them twitchy especially in a strong wind and hugely so in the small sizes. I only use my 8m 2011 Rally for occasional speed kiting these days and at 30kts and above (which it always is for speed kiting) and resting in between runs, the thing just doesn't want to stay put. Don't believe any reviews saying it's a stable kite. It is not. It's always darting and diving to one side or the other (and to those that may suggest checking line lengths and bridle the answer is yes of course). It's just the nature of the 2011 Rally beast in my experience.

For the 2013 Rally they calmed that right down (which made it more beginner friendly) but unfortunately in doing so introduced what I'd call a 'turbo lag' in the turning ( I had a 9m). Like a big diesel car when you put your foot on the gas, there's nothing then it takes off . Similarly, when you pull the bar on the 2013 Rally, there's a lag, then it turns fast. The 2013 Rally was also really heavy on the depower line when it got up to 30kts or so. The 2014 Rally is apparently a great kite with a good blend of all the positives and less of the negatives mentioned.

I do still have a 2012 10m Rally and that is definitely tamer but still has the characteristics of not wanting to sit at 12 o'clock for very long. When you're beginning you want something nice and tame that wants to sit happily at 12 so you've got lots of stress free time to sort yourself out and get the board on your feet etc.
