Hi Everyone,

I had a look through the 2nd hand store and found a couple of kites with a reasonable price tag. I would like your advice on these kites.
What i want to know is, are they good for a beginner/is there any big no-no kites for a beginner in the list.
Thanks in advance.
Wihan

Thanks for the response.
I read a whole lot of reviews, but they all seem to just highlight the good points.
I haven't really looked at the rebel, will definitely consider it.
Thanks

I bought a North rhino for my first kite, it was fun but brutal.

i now fly a switchblade 12m and it is a much nice kite to fly with better depower, stability and safety system. I would recommend the switch even if you do get flamed on this site for flying one

Years/models would be good to advise as it does matter. Also your weight and location.

The Airush Flow and Ozone Sport would be great to learn on as would the Helix, although 13m might be a bit big depending on your answers to the above.

The Vapor, I would probably not recommend, depending on model. They are brilliant kites but very quick and might be too much for a learner, especially a VapIII. Vap I and II possibly, but the kites above would be kinder to you.

My weight is about 87KG
Wind speed over the last week or so is very low -10-14 knots, but the local school says 12 - 14m kites.
I understand there is heaps of variables that determine what would be best for a specific person, but i would just like to know for now. Which kites are beginner friendly, and which are bit dangerous to learn on, as a more general guide to all people looking at picking up a bargain to know what to steer clear off.
Thanks for your input

[ + ] Cabrina Switchblade 12m - good
Naish Cult 12m - not responsive enough as other models on your list
[ + ] Naish Helix 12m - good
[ + ] Airrush FLow 12m - not responsive enough, turns slowest of all on your list
[ - ] Airrush Vapour 12m - stay clear of 5 lines kites as your first kite
[ + ] Ozone instict sports plus 13m - depending on year
Slingshot OCtane 13m - good
Slingshot RPM 12m - good
[ + ] North Rebel 12m - good in general
Liquid force Havoc 12m - good especially for your weight, will give you good power
Liquid force Envy 12m - best all rounder kite: Top choice IMO
Blade Trigger 12m - 2010 models good
Bandid DOS 12m - good

Best buy from shops as believe me you will have lots of questions and advice you will need to seek, also if things go wrong you have someone to assist right away. You also need lessons. Check thoroughly of condition, damages, tears, repairs, lines are not frayed or worn, connecting points not worn. Try to suck through kite material and see how much air you manage to suck through. If loads, it means the material is well worn. Stay clear or you will regret your purchase. Most shops will give you some warranty even for second hand gear. Good luck hunting! If we can help, let us know. We have great packages on clearance right now - 2008 kite, board, harness and all accessories requires for $1250 with 6 hours free lesson!

Never had thought of this, would be great to see someone in a shop looking through heaps of kites and giving them all a suck

The RPM would also be an excellent kite with a good safety system and super easy relaunch - the 2 most important things when starting out.
Avoid kites with large repairs in the Leading Edge tube, unless you pump them up and check that the repair is sound and the kite holds air.

First thing you should do is get a lesson or two under your belt. If the place you are having lessons at are any good they should be able to recommend a kite that suits your needs. There are a few contributing factors to take into account like your size, the average wind range for your area and the type of water your going to be riding on weather it be surf or flat or both. Your board choice will be also a thing to factor into this decision. You wont be able to to tell allot of difference between allot of kites in your first season nor with boards so thats why its a good idea to rely on a reputable shop to start out with. If you let us know where you are based then im sure someone on here will be able to direct you to the best place to start.
Good luck.
