Hi

I have just finished my lessons and now trying to get the hang of water starts. I did my lessons at Woodmans Point but my instructor recommended the river and specifically Point Walter in the mornings (SE / SSE winds). I was starting to stand for a few meters but waves / swell at Woodies just made progressing harder.

Got any advice for someone just starting out and wanting the calm of the river? Where would you recommend and what wind direction should I be looking for?

Thanks
NickT

The ocean is your friend if you want clean wind. Pt Walter is crowded on an easterly and in my eyes a poor place to learn, Attadale would have more people at your level on an easterly although all river locations have gusty winds.

I recommend penguin island at shoal water to beginners myself as it gets good winds on a seabreeze and the water conditions are reasonably flat. If sharks are a concern it's pretty protected also as there's a sand bar at the southern end which also gives shallower water for your water starts

Woodies is a good place to learn, probably better than the river. The waves are pretty small... The river has very small beaches, with trees, powerlines and roads waiting to snare you. Also the wind is much gustier on the river.

Advice for Point Walter - lots of sharp rocks if you walk out too close to the shore. Go down the sandbar a bit and downwind of the other kiters. Don't miss the end of the sandbar though!

You could also try Melville Beach in Applecross in a SW. Start downwind of the big gum tree.

Melville sucks. too much weed and tiny area for launching and landing.. I would steer clear. Agree that the river is crap at the best of time. The wind is up and down and no good for learning on.

As NickT said pengo's is best. That's where I've had the most progression as it's sheltered and reasonably flat, but the wind is great. Also if there's an easterly you can just drive 1km south to the pond and go out to the beach from there.
