Hi guys,

Just settled in Australia and I'm looking forward to buy myself second hand gear.

KITE: I'm 52kg and wondering if for Perth's winds I should get 7m or 8m.

WETSUIT: is it ultimately needed, especially now that summer is coming?

If any of you has any advice on where to buy second hand gear (apart from Gumtree) I would surely appreciate it.

As for right now Im an independent --learner-- and would like if anyone (newbies, pros) would like to join for kite session now that season is starting.

Thanks guys!

Welcome to WA!
good place to start are any of the many kite surfing shops in and around Perth - all do second hand gear and free advice on spots etc.
there are a few spots around ideal for learning including safety bay/shoal water in the south and even on the river in melville - both can be crowded at times but week days should be fine. Loads of experienced local kites at these spots and others that can help out and give advice.
the Buy and Sell section seabreeze is also good but need to know what you are looking for.....at 52 kg I would go for a 7 and an 11 probably. Shorty wetsuit for either end of the season - boardies/ra shies in summer

Hi jennavzla

For the same size, kites can be more or less powerful depending on the specific brand and model. For example, some 7m kites would be MORE powerful than some 8m kites...At your weight you should even consider some 6m kites (especially if it's a powerful one). 8m is a bit big IMO but then again it depends on the model you choose.

My advice is to buy second hand gear from a kite shop so you can get quality stuff, good advice and service. I also recommend you buy a brand new harness, which you can only find in a shop obviously. Otherwise I would recommend as a learner you only buy second hand gear on the Online ads with the help of an experienced kiter only.

Something tells me you won't have any difficulty finding friends to kite with and give you tips.

Hiya,
Welcome to Perth.

There's a Facebook site called kite sales wa that has second hand kit for sale locally. Some of the stuff looks really cheap. In fact the last two posts are for used 6m and a 7m kites which look ok

i'm just starting and I bought a mixture of new and used gear from kite addiction in Myaree which is a shop close to Walter Point. Good advice and helPful staff.

The river always has gustier winds, no matter which location you go to or which direction the wind is blowing, the wind always blows over the land which make it more turbulent.

Point Walter only works on due East winds or ENE. Not so good if there is any South in it or too much North in it. Easterly winds are very gusty and this particular spot can have well in excess of 50 kiters with plenty of lessons going on at the same time, so not the ideal beginner spot... The only advantages of the river is that in almost any wind direction you can find a spot that works, and most spots are shallow as well.

Because there are so many other spots on the coast line they are usually less crowded and the wind is A LOT cleaner. Before you go in the ocean you just need to be sure you are comfortable at self-rescue, board recovery and water relaunch...all in deep waters. If you go in the ocean you really want a minimum of 18 knots so it's easy to relaunch your kite and get going on the board.

Reliable sea breeze winds should only start about mid-October and will get heaps better in November onward, so no need to rush at the moment.

Buy a 5m and move to Geraldton. We do free windsurfing and SUP lessons here also.
