Hey bomber - welcome to seabreeze.

Someone else might be better at explaining it, but for me it's about the balancing of forces.
For a simple reverse direction it's about getting your kite heading in the reverse direction at the right speed. Doing this at the right time with the right amount of grunt, so you don't fall in the drink. Repeated practise by time on water gives you the intuitive feel for it.
I guess if you're getting pulled forward by the kite, maybe it's because you're turning the kite too hard/fast, are not leaning back enough in anticipation of the extra pull, or are slowing up to much before turning the kite?
Even though I've been doing it for years, it's hard to think about how it happens - you'll know this feeling soon enough too.
Once it clicks in, you'll never think about it again.
