Just new to the sport and loving every minute of it so far. Anyways im up and going on the board and can staty upwind pretty well. Problem im having is when i want to go back the other way im having to sink back into the water for another water start. Ive seen other kiters and have tried to replicate the turn where i dont get wet however find that while doing so im getting pulled forward by the kite. Any tips /useful advice on perfecting this quick change of direction?

Hey bomber - welcome to seabreeze.

Someone else might be better at explaining it, but for me it's about the balancing of forces.

For a simple reverse direction it's about getting your kite heading in the reverse direction at the right speed. Doing this at the right time with the right amount of grunt, so you don't fall in the drink. Repeated practise by time on water gives you the intuitive feel for it.

I guess if you're getting pulled forward by the kite, maybe it's because you're turning the kite too hard/fast, are not leaning back enough in anticipation of the extra pull, or are slowing up to much before turning the kite?

Even though I've been doing it for years, it's hard to think about how it happens - you'll know this feeling soon enough too.

Once it clicks in, you'll never think about it again.

I dont know if this helps but i have just started to do what your asking. As i get to the point of wanting to turn back the other way be it up or down wind. Pretty much all at the same time i bring the kite up to twelve and sign it down in the opposite direction but not to aggressively depending on the wind. Stop edging and your board slides down wind only for a split second which is when i transfer my weight to the opposite direction and away you go. Yes it was hard to do at first but it only took one turn to get the feel for it. Most guys that have been kiting for any length of time just do it as second nature and dont really have to think about it too much. Hope this helps in some way.

Making sure to keep your board speed up start to send you kite back up to 12, move the kite quickly, as the kite passes through the zenith edge hard upwind and extend your back leg to get the kite pointing more down wind and stall your board. You want to steer it agressively and you should find yourslef going slightly downwind in the opposite way to what you were just going. All good. I hope that made sense...
