Hi,

I am having trouble slowing down.

I know in theory i just have to sheet out and edge hard.
However as i try to edge the boards usually starts skipping downwind. Sheeting out does not depower the kite enough.
When this happens i try and bring the kite up to 12 however i usually just have a massive wipe out leaving my board 30m+ upwind.
I am working on my L stance rather than the C.

Any other tips? When i am skipping downwind is there anything i can do?

Thanks very much for the advice.

Cheers
Craig

p.s. I fly a 12 or 9 at Botany NSW. Board is a 132 Jamie Pro. I am 75kg.

keeping the kite low helps to edge, the kite will fly forward to the edge of the window if you can hold it long enough. it comes with practice.

failing that, go the ol' bum drag (as long as you have strong undies to avoid an enema)

bar out, kite high and drive those heels in. you may be standing up too straight so lean back and let your harness take the pull of the kite.

You are most likely driving your back foot too quickly or with the kite too high.

You need to maintain the edge as you drive against the kite. Be patient as you need to drive hard until the kite moves toward the edge of the window.

All of the above – kite low, edge hard slowing your speed and pushing the kite ahead to the edge of the window.

Also try taking your front hand off so you can lean out further giving you more leverage against the kite. You’ll often see people doing this when they’re well or over powered, it’s not a “Look at me I can ride single handed!” but a technique for staying in control.

I was having the same problem big time!! I've found that the harder you edge the more tension you build up on your lines until you just can't hold the edge any more and you get pulled forwards either skipping your board across the water or do a face plant! Another way of coping is to do a little S carve TOWARDS your kite - essentially going more downwind - this relieves the tension in your lines and feels a whole lot gentler, then heading back cross or up wind. I know it's totally opposite to what everyone else is saying, but it works for me, and was also the start of really beginning to play with my board a lot and having heaps more fun.

Thanks for all the input.
Will def try everything out next time.
Glad to hear it is a norm situation which can be overcome with practice and fine tuning.

Hey CraigHHSC
sounds like your body position is making you do a downwind chase where you get faster, faster, faster, and then SMASH!!. Sounds like you have case of the dreaded poo stance!
You need to point the board towards the kite to get going but as soon as you are up you need to start thinking body position.
1- front leg almost straight
2- back leg bent
3- 70% of your weight over your back leg
4- lean back into your harness

This will help you get an upwind body position.

Only when you have your stance dialled in will you be able to edge and control your board speed.

Spend some time looking at the more experienced riders and copy their stance.

Even better set a bar up (two bits of rope and a sawn up wooden brooms handle) connect to a tree in the back yard and practise your body position, you'll look like a knob but tyhe muscle memory will kick in when you get back on the water.

also check out youtube for water start videos and focus on the body position>

when ya board starts skipping downwind 'sideways', like that point your board downwind for a second to regain controll and then turn back upwind n start edging again.

you'll never regain an edge when your board is goin sideways like that by edging more. Your board is allready on its edge, just going the wrong way. You gotta point the board the way your going and then turn back into your edge. Just like when your doing a water start.

If you pick up too much speed and you can't control it lift your board up and slide on your ass. Its called ABS (Ass Braking System). we used to use it in the old days of the C kites when we learnt. At least it keeps the board with you instead of leaving it way upwind

good advice .it also allows the kite to go to the edge of the window which is what you are trying to accomplish by shheting out.Sheet out as well while doing this

Stomp down hard on your trailing leg until your ass hits the water, and push your hips forward.
