I have a BWS Noise 2013 model 12m.
Lately I have been flying on my smaller 9m kite and love the responsiveness of it etc.

Going back to the 12m was a totally different experience. It turns really slowly and I have to pull the bar in a fair bit to actually get it to do anything. Looking at the back lines they look like they are a bit slack, almost as if they are too long. I'm using the original bar.
When I talked to BWS support they recommended I get a new bar and lines, but am hesitant to splash out 500 bucks because of it. The bar is in good condition otherwise.

Any ideas what I could do? Perhaps add a few knots up where the backlines connect to the bridle to shorten them??

did you use the same bar on the 9m when you used it?
bigger kites turn slower for 2 reasons,
1, they are bigger, more weight, more inertia, etc
2, you use them in less wind, less wind = less responsive turning

New bar won't make any difference, but the lines might, you can either shorten your rears or lengthen the centres.
check out the various youtube vids for details about line lengths and compare yours.

the 9m is a different kite, has its own bar.

I am aware that bigger kites turn slower and perhaps wind was a factor too, it just felt very sluggish to turn and I had to pull the bar in...

Try using the 9m bar on your 12m.
Bws kites are also pretty sloppy, from experience you need to pump them up solid to get them performing.
If you want to stick with bws I would recommend getting the new 3 strut one, its a massive step forward.

Thanks for your help. So is it generally possible to use different brand bars with the same kite? I prefer the bar from my other kite anyway and it has the option to be extended to suit bigger kites (but obviously intended to be used with the same brand but bigger kite)...

Yeah, pretty much any bar can be used with any kite these days, as they all use equal length lines.
One thing people argue is the positioning on where the centre lines separate, as if they separate higher it can pull the kite into a more "C" shape, although from personal experience I haven't noticed a massive difference in these situations.
Another thing to be wary of is wether they have the loop or knot to attach to the kite but this can easily be fixed with adaptors.

If you prefer the other bar go for it, you may not even have to extend it.

You can use your 9m bar on your 12m kite. The only difference is the bar width probably something like 40cm for the 9 bar and 45cm on the 12. The extra width is supposed to allow more responsive turning. If it flys nicer on the 9m bar I suspect its your lines and you can probably adjust the lengths on the 12m bar or just use your 9m bar.

To be honest its probably just because you have been flying a 9 and now your back to flying a 12 it feels like a truck. Thats because it is a truck, People say the BWS Kites are sized 2 sizes smaller than actual so your 12 is probably more like a 14. I had a 10 and it was like a 12. my 10 wasn't fast turning at all, my new 12 of another brand is much quicker.

Yes I think you are right Pezzy. I tried a 2010 Slingshot 12m the other day and it was faster turning for sure. It allowed me to create more apparent wind by sining it quicker. I suppose the BWS 12m working like a 13 or 14m sorta makes up for this...

You probably did it but anyway, i had same thing with my switchblade 12, bar wasn't tuned, outer lines were 5-6 cm longer and practically kite was depowered even bar pulled in. I tuned (youtube) center lines if i recall well, making them longer to "repower" it (match optimum line length), and in about same wind, it was noticeably more responsive, still kinda slow but like experienced riders say, bigger kite, slower wind slower responsiveness.

cool thanks Just. I'll just connect my other bar which I know is working ok and see how it goes with that one.

Hi there. I recently contacted BWS for some info on their older "Noise Classic" kites as i was looking at a second hand kite to learn on. A rep there mentioned the P-Lines shrink on these kites over time, and most likely need replacing on older kites. This might be worth looking in to? This article might be of use? www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Kitesurfing/Newbies-Tips-Tricks/bws-noise-p-lines/

I recommend packing the 12 in deep storage and keep flying the 9...you wont have a slow turning problem anylonger...

Hi Kajo. Is that 2023 kite the original classic with the P Lines ? If so, as they shrink they will absolutely mess up the handling. You can compare against original specifications, or remove them altogether. Other than that check that the front and rear lines are them same length when the bar is sheeted in.

Bigger kites turn slower (of course).
You're on the northern beaches of Sydney. We suffer from crap wind here. Light wind just makes things worse.
The BWS Noise is generally speaking a slower turning kite than some other brands. You really need to reef that bar to get it to go quicker.

As above, if this is an older Noise "classic", it has P-lines on the bridle. They shrink over time and the kite starts flying real bad. When I had this problem on one of the older Noise classic kites, replacing the P-lines was like buying a new kite. It really makes that much of a difference.

And the other thing is as mentioned above, check the bar and lines. I go to the local park maybe once a year with all my bars and test them one by one. Attached all lines to a fixed point, and check that all lines show equal tension when holding the bar. I think there's plenty of Youtube videos showing how to do this.

My 13m turns sweet. Until I fly my 10 for a while. Then the 13 feels like a truck. But if a have a few sessions on my 8m the 10m feels like a truck. Then when i get wind enough to have some sessions on the the 6m............... The 13 turns like a super tanker, 10m like train and 8m like a truck......

It's all relative. . . . .. .. . .. .. . .. .. . ... . .. .... . . . . . . . . .

I just want to point out for the sake of correct information, the current noise pro is correctly sized I.e. A 10m is 10m not a 12, the noise pro's are also significantly faster than the noise classics

Like the others have said check/ replace the p lines and check the line lengths but even when tuned perfectly the 12m noise classic is a tractor, it does what it's designed to do, ultra stable light wind strapless cruiser, but essentially it is a tractor
