Hey all,

I have just attempted to try a few tricks and having a little trouble with one of the first tricks. I can boost and pop well but can not land a back flip.

Pop - Check
Speed - Check
Kite at approx 11 - check
Turn - check
rotate - almost (having trouble spoting the landing)

I now know what to do to rotate - but when i F%&( up, the kite is in the power zone and i get launched out of the water and down wind very quickly???? Why so??? I cover all points get launched every time. and the AKS tips and trick section says the kite should just sit up @ 12????

HELP?

Hi Ashkiter,

To assist in rotating, carve up wind hard, prior to your release off the water
To prevent overflying the kite keep your hands in the middle of the bar, and don't pull the control bar towards you.

Hope this helps. Goodluck

Put both Hands in centre of the bar, medium speed, carve board upwind, slightly bend knees and push off, look over front shoulder, pull in bar as you pop(if you need height), AND dont steer the kite!!
Sounds like you're steering kite and looping it (getting horizontal and going down wind?)
Have Fun.
ps all the guides say this trick is best learnt in 15-20 knot winds with 10-12m kites, ie steady, medium strength wind with larger kites that as less sensitive to accidental steering input.
Keep practising ashkiter

MMM Im trying it in 20-25 knots - thats a little of the trouble right there. Im getting the carve upwind but not spotting the landing.

even with you hands in the middle of the bar, you can still send a small kite back into a loop. with your back hand try having 2 fingers on either side of the chicken line.

It sounds like you don't get the lift from the pop, so you rely on the lift of the kite too much, therefore you hang onto the bar instead of doing the roll. In 20-25 knots you may find some chops to take off from. That would eliminate the need for you to pull the bar at all, or rely on the power of the kite too much. Just turn your eye the way you want to land, and your body will follow....effortless effort....

look over your shoulder as you rotate and u will spot the water while your upside down which lets you adjust as you land, too easy

Whilst looking over your shoulder, spot the water and pull on your front hand. That should stop you rotating and help you to land.

Don't over analyse it... Back rolls are sooooooo easy it sounds like you just thinking about it way to much..

Sounds similar to the problem I was having when first attempting back rolls. I was unknowingly pulling more on my back hand which was sending the kite rapidly into the power zone in the opposite direction to where I was headed. (Although my hands where in the middle of the bar) I corrected this by pulling a bit of pressure on the ‘forward’ hand about mid roll. i.e. If you’re riding left foot forward when initiating the trick, then your ‘front’ hand is your left hand.

yeah, i think it initially feels intuitive to pull on the back hand, as though that would help your body rotate, but it doesn't work like that. once you've got your kite where you want it to initiate the jump then even bar pressure and then front hand only as you steer the kite down for power as you land.

trying them in lighter wind also lets you experiment more with less fear of getting smacked.

With your kit a 11-12 you arent really going to be able to do a back roll or a flip as the angle the kite is pulling is wrong you need to have the kite at 60 deg or less for this, allso with the kite high i would think it would be hard to carry good speed and achieve good pop. I can only assume that if you do have good speed that you are actually flying your kite lower and then taking it up to do the roll which means the kite will be all ready moving and more prone to wander when doing the trick.

The position of the kite that you are using is only going to be good for spinning so dont edge and pop as hard as this wont help, find a bit of a wave and carve up it but not with a hard edge and when you release pull in on your bar to get lift with the kite to do the spin bring your knees up to spin faster and spot your landing and pull on your front hand to redirect the kite to land with some speed.

If you want to do a back roll start with good speed kite at less than 60 deg around the 10.30 mark , go down wind a bit to let the kite drop back in the window a little then edge back upwind as far and hard as you can while looking over your back sholder when you release from the water you will allready be half way around spot your landing and ride away down wind a little.

Keep practicing, keep your hands in close to the middle of the bar, and use the power of the kite dont be scared of it to much depower and it makes it a lot harder and you are more likely to try and pull yourself around on the bar and redirect the kite.

How does this help? He's asking for advice, and yours is "don't worry, you don't need to think about what you're doing. I don't need to"?

If you're having trouble spotting your landing, remember to turn your head so that you are looking over your shoulder as you rotate. This helps set your body language up for the rotation too. Good Luck

Hi Ashkiter,

Sorry to hear you're having difficulties. Which trick are you trying to learn? On my site I have :-

Back Rolls
Tantrum (hooked)
Toeside Back Flip

Let me know which trick you are trying to master and I'll analyse if I can.

Cheers,

KH

G'day Ashkiter, your checklist sounds good until you get to Rotate.
I think you just need to throw yourself into the rotation a bit harder.
When i was learning backrolls i found i wasn't rotatating fast enough,
which makes it near on impossible to land one cleanly.

Then i HTFU and threw myself into it as hard as i could, and of course i
over rotated and still crashed. But from this point it was much easier to
back off a bit and start landing perfectly. Good Luck

I remember my first attempt at a backroll a few years back.
I commited way too hard, ended up spinning around about 5 times while pulling hard on my back hand sending the kite into a loop.

Spinning around 5 times then flying through the air backwards head first getting totally smashed........gee I love this sport[}:)]

Try it off a small wave or bit of chop first, will give you a bit more air and time to spot the landing.

After rotating, straightening your legs out will help slow down your spin so you dont over rotate, but be ready to bend them on landing to absorbe the impact if your comming down hard and fast.

Hey All,

Thanks for the advice -
1 - I can see I am not comitting the the turn enough - May complete a 720 first.
2 - And as everyone is telling me - Keep hands in the middle of the bar..

If im still having troubles - I'll come for a lesson KH

Hey Ash,

No need to pay for a lesson, just come and see me and If I'm not busy, I'll spend 20 minutes with you and we'll sort it out. I should have access to a spare helmet and radio which should see the results in a matter of a few attempts.

Cheers mate,

ashkiter, your doing everything right except your looping the kite with out knowing it.

As D meredith said, dont think about it too much, they are very easy so DONT try too hard to get it right.

What you are doing wrong is you are applying a tiny bit of pressure to the bar with your back hand, so little that you will swear your not pulling on it at all.....but you are. When I was learning back rolls I got the natural side pretty quick but it was ages before I could land a goofy back roll without looping the kite. I would end up doing a back roll, kite loop transition and wonder what went wrong (when I didn't eat sh**t).

put both your hands in the centre of the bar as close as you can and try as hard as possible not to pull on the bar to throw your self around. Once you are most of the way through your rotation pull on your front hand, this will bring your kite back to 12 or forward in the window depending on where it went during your rotation.

good luck !
