Hi,
Starting to do back rolls and seem to only be able to land them when I try going inverted and off a kicker. Only landing 50% of these. I've been told to start on a lower roll/up right spin with trying to concentrate on keeping the board lower and flat on the water... Really struggle to do the simple kind. Any tips? Cheers

Hooked or unhooked? How are you not landing them? So you're just aiming to spin under the kite from a load n' pop?

Just take your kite to 12 and teabag your way through it.

I could land them but as I'm landing the kite is always mid loop I need to just let go with my backhand, as I rotate I think I'm pulling with backhand.

The trick is to hold the middle of the bar with both hands, this stops you from pulling the bar to one side

Yeah hooked on.can't seem to get the rotation unless I really throw it hard and go inverted. I'm all or nothing

Sounds like zero load n' pop, or light wind . . . or something. I dunno, post a video

IMO don't focus on competing a rotation in one go, in a single continuous spin. Any change in lift from the kite will result in a ****-up.

Instead, keep your hands in the center, kite just above 45 degrees; carve upwind like you're doing a transition but don't edge hard to stall the board. You'll come off the water, and you'll have aimed to make a half rotation with your body; you'll pendulum up, staring back upwind and enjoying the view. When you start falling down again, then your head to rotate your body and prepare to land downwind.

Remember rope swings as a kid, the ones hung from a tree branch? Running, letting your speed carry you off the ground then spinning around to swing back down and do it again . . . same thing with the kite.

Bringing your legs up and the board higher than your head will help to arrest your rotation if you think you're going to keep spinning.
Pull your front hand (briefly) to lower the kite and use the pull to pull you around.

When you get a feel for the timing, you can do the whole thing a single spin, with a little less altitude . . . or use some extra spin to land toe-side . . . then down loop and carve a transition. The above technique also works for boosting a 360 degree back roll too . . . you spend your hang time staring upwind which is fun or spin more and go for a 720.

you can do them just by taking the kite to 12 and riding straight up into the wind, pop 180 and land downwind as you dive the kite back down.

Hey guys, I am new to the forums. Cheers for the add.

Just read this thread, and yeah I can vouch for FC's comment there. Don't try and kick the board up and around, as you'll lose control at first. Just spin yourself around and my tip is to point your vision in the direction you're spinning (look over your shoulders). You'll see more of what you're doing and make your landings every time!

Safe winds everyone!

Some basics to apply...

First imagine you doing the complete trick (watch pov vids like this one...)

load and pop and create the roll inertia, and don´t forget to press your front hand not to kiteloop, just add a little pressure and maintain it...

As you get more confident, you can maintain your kite at 45º that will allow you to make a more agressive trick, and them later gonna be ready to a power backroll (unhooked), good luck...

I never really thought about a back roll as doing a 180. I reckon that will help me stick the landing as i always over rotate. Good advice.

Backroll is really simple mate. The best advice is don't overthink it. Ill try to explain how I do them.
1. If you want to go inverted, your going to need either more wind or more boardspeed (prefer both)
2. Keep the kite low (around 45 degrees) if you go higher chances are you will over-rotate or pull that back hand and end the rotation early
3. I found if you want a nice inverted roll, steer downwind, just for a sec, then edge hard for your backroll. stomp your backfoot as you exit the water
4. Throw your head over your front shoulder and really try to use your abs to bring your feet above your head.

Ive found alot of the time people fail cos of either not much wind or not keeping their hands in the middle and redirecting the kite backwards

This is a vid I made for the backroll to toeside. The technique is the same, just forget the part to bring your hips around

I was very inconsistent at landing backrolls with nice form and still am a bit. I recently had some super flat water and the difference it makes is phenomenal when trying to utilise load and pop. I was landing every one easily and cleanly with flat water. With chop/slop I usually only get a nice landing provided I use a nicely presented kicker

I've been watching the progression series. Deep dives into everything. Really awesome. One of the main points it makes about back rolls is kite position. When you load the kite and head to 12 o'clock, pull the bar in, edge hard upwind and start your backroll....rotate and when you spot the landing pull the front hand down and the kite yanks you out of the roll and into the landing position with forward momentum. I put this into practice and it worked amazingly. Get your hands on the progression series as someone recommended to me.

Could keep that back hand pulled hard and finish that kite loop and be way more stylish. Remember, loops make you 10 times cooler.

FWI let the board do the work. If you have a reasonable amount of speed and just edge the board hard upwind and keep edging upwind you will feel the board load and then accelerate out of the water then just look over your shoulder and let your body do what it naturally does. Keep the kite around 11 as you edge upwind. The better you feel the edge of the board and what it is doing the easier it will be.
