Kite control is key. That's why the sport is called kiteboarding, not boardboarding

It's a LOT easier to go big and just spin as much as possible, and concentrate on flying the kite as you normally would; if you focus on the bar, and forget about which way you're facing until you need to spit the landing, it's a cinch. And you'll find that as you redirect the kite, it'll pull you around to face the landing.
Front rolls I find easier to go big and multiple. A single rotation for a back roll is basicaaly boost to facing upwind, hang around looking at the view then redirect and whip the body around to land.
The worst thing that has happened is redirecting too soon and facing backward as you slam into the water. As F-cab said, keep the kite at 12 til you've got a feel for it...
Oh, key point - make sure you rotate around the long head-toe axis cleanly. You'll spin easier and in the beginning, it's easier to control...
