I'm yet another guy looking for advice as a beginner coming out of lessons and looking at gear. I've searched around a lot on this site but its all down to weight it seems so I thought I'd give I my details for a recommendation from you guys.

I am 95kgs. I'm fit, not fat. Will be kiting in Victoria, mainly melbourne and surf coast areas.

I've ridden a core gts2 in my lessons. 11m has been the size and that's what the instructor recommends for the melbourne wind range. What's another couple of kites I could look at also?

Many thanks

Here's some recent information on and discussion about the Lithium 12 www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Kitesurfing/Review/Airush-Lithium-12m-vs-Cabrinha-Switchblade-12m/

I'm 95kg and kite in Melbourne. For my first kite I purchased a 13.5m kahoona. I found that this was good up to around 22kts, after that I would get overpowered and it wasn't that enjoyable to ride. Ideal for me is around 18-20kts.

I have a 11.5m Best kahoona that I use a lot but I do find that I still get a lot of use out of my 13.5. I think getting a 12 for your first kite is probably a lot safer than a 13-14, even if it means as a bigger guy you need a little more wind. I usually find when most people are on 10's, I'm on my 11.5 and when they are on 12's I'm on my 13.5.

My experience with a few different brands, North Rebel, Best Kahoona, Cabrinha Switchblade is that there isn't much of a difference that a beginner trying to get up and ride would notice. I am sure the more experienced riders on here can point out many key differences but as a beginner I really don't think it matters too much between the big brands.

Research the safety system on the kite though and make sure you are comfortable with it, especially if you are considering an older kite.

For your reference I ride a 140 Cabrinha Prodigy board

Best Kahoonas are excellent learning and beginner kites and are used in schools in Europe
Read the reviews
They have fantastic relaunh capabilities if the kite goes dowm important in waves
Easy self launch and land ,great drift downwind ,heaps of power when required
Get a demo on one

Im 87 kg and ride Best Kahoona V3 11.5 9.5 and 7.5 mainly in waves on a TT
If you tie your outer lines to the knott closest to the kite this powers up the kite
You can then ride a smaller kite for the same wind condition
Im often on 7.5when others are on 10 and 11
Smaller kites more fun to fly
Depowered the 7.5can handle 35kts in gusty conditions
never had it in any stroner than that
Have fun-you will

If I'm not asking too much now, I'm also seeking advice on what size/brand/make of board. I'm keen on a wake style board as opposed to a surfboard.

Cheers.

North's popping up as a 'buy' recommend for kook-intermediates like me all over the place.

I 've two Cabrinha Switchblades (a 2011 12 and an 2012 8) .. they're user friendly as all ****, and the safety tech is massive ... but as my skills are improving I'm finding them sluggish? ... how do the Norths 'feel'? are they snappier?

Well done m8,
commitment is the main thing. I have a Method 12m and it's a nice kite but I've heard the lithiums are pretty special, so well done.
Get a large TT . It's all a bout time on the water not in it at your level, at any level..
140 x 45 min or above 6200 squared cms. Even a light wind TT like a Plasma, anything to get you planing. Tronics are a nice board but I don't know if they do the big sizes?

hey!

the airush is a great kite as far as my limited knowledge can tell! it seems to fly really smoothly and is really easy to relaunch. couldn't say a bad word about it really.

got a 144 board also so it's all pretty great for me. have been out 4 times on my own now, did a HUGE jump last night in the bay (haha) and am very stoked.

Would a Best Kahoona 13.5 make a good light wind kite for someone of 70kgs... Been suggested a 12 or so Switchblade. I normally ride a 10 Cat. Been offered a great deal, and no deal is that great if its the wrong thing! Advice appreciated...

It amazes me how many times these types of threads re-appear and yet we still reply to them all! Why can't the mods (Laurie!?) create a sticky and be done with it?

I really liked the V3 kahoona I had but there are much better light wind kites.
