Guys,

Please go deeper into the water at least to waist high.

There is reason for this...

[1] Save smashing your kite onto the hard beach/sand and damage it (point of this thread)
[2] Deep water saves your ass when you get lofted or pulled hard forward
[3] You learn to put board on feet and power up and water start in a more real-to-life situation in deep water cause when you're out there kiting and you happen to crash the kite, you won't be able to touch the bottom. You need to learn how to control your kite, relaunch, reposition and take off again in deep water, which is why learning this at the start is important.

and

[4] You're out of the way from kiters that want to kite near the shore line (I don't get it but a lot of them love this).

Just saying.

I agree with the sentiments, but this comment is probably the very reason that beginners like being near shore also........ They just don't appreciate the risks fully.

Oh yeah, and beginners are probably less interested in show-boating for beach goers

i helped rescue a guy last year who was in his first week of kiting, in ancle deep water trying to boost, he ended up in a comber for a couple of weeks. i was the first one to get to him and i honestly thaught he was dead. in one way the shallow water was a good thing because everybody came running out and could help. i couldnt do much accept try and keep his head out of water coz i was in boots so i dunno what i would have done if nobody else could run out and help, on the other hand it wouldn't have happened in deep water.

we are talking about taking your kite out far enough to no crash it on the beach on the first dive, makes sense last thing you want to do is hit someone or crash it on the beach. If you can't judge where your kite might fall to go a bit further or deeper even body drag out.

Be very careful kiting Melbourne winds in winter months, the wind is usually due to weather fronts and can be very gusty and unpredictable compared to summer sea breezes. Wind strength can change 10 knots in a matter of minutes and catches many newbie unaware. Learn to read the weather, black clouds on the horizon can be a good sign to come in..good luck.
