Hi all,

New to the sport. I am already a board rider in the way of wakeboarding and snowboarding. Looking forward to getting into kitting. Getting a lesson on Sunday at Kingscliff. Just wondering where everyone thinks the best spot on the Gold Coast is for beginners.

Thanks

Theres a few angry locals at kfc who will cut your lines if you crash into them. Almost saw this happen a few weeks ago, learn to kite properly before graduating to kfc.

Maybe they should have learned this basic skill before getting on their board....

Johnny Utah: Okay. I get it. This is where you tell me that "locals rule", and that Yuppie insects like me shouldn't be surfing the break, right?

Bunker Weiss: [smiling] Nope.

Surf gang: That would be a waste of time...

Lupton "Warchild" Pittman: We're just gonna **** you up!

Surf Gang line was Tone, played by Anthony Kiedis from Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Anyway, after a couple of sessions in the broadwater I got over all the other kites in close proximity and have just been learning in the ocean. Just stick to the smaller swell days and you have some big areas all to yourself. Might be slowing the progression a little, but clean water, white sand and space are a pretty good trade off.

Good onya that's probably the go, no one likes crowds and if you can get out in the surf during the popular summer season then happy days. As soon as I'm competent enough to fly a kite and get out into the ocean goodbye broadwater!

Are there really aggro kiters at KFC that will cut your lines!?

That is not what kiting is about kids!

Shearwater is better for beginners because theres a beach to walk your kite upwind , its not as busy with people , theres no rock retaining wall ,seen plenty of beginners dragged onto . Saw a dude giving a lesson at kfc ,landing there kite upwind of a group of kids ! yes I explained the danger . The shallow water is dangerous for beginners as they can hit the bottom easier when they lose kite control .Kfc has a very small set up area . Kfc is only good for beginners with a good n safe instructor [Lostinspace].

Have been having lessons at KFC, my instructor takes us out to a sand bar 250m out, you can body drag out and back in. You then have the hole area to your self, and no one gets scared.

If you going to Shearwater keep an eye on the tides. During the spring tides the run in the tide will work against you if it is running the same as the wind direction.
Use the tide to you advantage especially if the wind is marginal for your kites size. Half way into a tide is its peak flow. As a beginner you can get pretty tired walking back up the beach so don't make it worse.
