Hey everyone, i'm new to kitesurfing and was wondering what a good beginner kit would be? If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them!

Hey mate, there a lot of options re good kites for begginee and professing to advanced. Depends on style, waves, freestyle, wake ect
Also how much you want to spend.
The wind range in your area.
I have mulipe kites and boards.
I mainly use 1 kite 1 board.
Have you had lessons?
Your kite school will advise you on (kit)
Good idea to do a bit of research before you buy.

Oh man. I wish I had $5 (not asked enough to warrant $1) for every time these questions get asked.

Sorry. Being a troll. Beginners should ask anything in here really. We are more than happy to help - really we are. :)

Ok. Here is my effort, since I had to open my big gob!

A "good" beginner's kit is dependent on your weight, and as mentioned above, the environment you're going to kite in. I personally do a lot of land kiting, so I would obviously go for a board with wheels and a smaller kite. Sorry... tee hee... uncalled for.

Ok...

Ahem... take two!

A "good" beginner's kit is dependent on your weight, and as mentioned above, the environment you're going to kite in. First and foremost (oh I wish I had $2 for saying this too!), get lessons. Get as many as you can afford to get comfortable enough with what kite surfing is all about. It's not just hooting around on the ocean. It's about safety. It's about equipment. And of course it's about you. What do YOU want from the sport and why?

Ok. You've had the lessons? Good. Now onto the gear.

If you weight like most grommets around the 60 to 75kg mark, a 10mt or even 12mt kite is more than enough. A suitable TT board around 140 or even 150cm size is a good beginner size. It will certainly get you moving. The rest is up to you. Of course you need a harness to start with, but not essential (believe it or not). Anyway... a good bucket seat type harness is great because they simply don't go up your waist and crack ya ribs!

Once you get going and get comfortable with it, you WILL want to change your gear and customise it to suit your style and needs. Most of us keep our original kit, but many sell them off and buy greater and better things.

In terms of a good beginner kite - stick with known brands - North, Cabrinha and Ozone. They rule! The others are just... meh.. shall we say... MEH!! MEH!! yeah.

Anyway... not a grommet? An old 40+ kook like me? Well then my fellow friend... let me show you what REAL kite surfing is all about.....

all brands have kites suited to people new to the sport. Find some late model kites on seabreeze and then do some searches for reviews on them!

And go with a brand that has good local support. Near me there are 3 shops. 1 of these shops treats plp like idiots, been in there 4 times and walked out every time thinking 'how the hell do they stay in business'. They were actually the first shop I contacted and bought a trainer from them, treated like crap, did't go back for lessons. Every time I've bought something and last time I ordered an item only to have the price go up when it arrived???? Never go back and an easy way to eliminate a couple of brands.

My kite developed a leak at the inflate valve at 20 months of age. I called the local shop I had lessons with and bought my kit from (full kit + 2nd larger kite), for some advice not expecting anything for free - he had a courier pick it up, replaced the LE bladder under warranty - apparently these funky big inflate valves are not able to be repaired. It took 3 weeks to have the new bladder shipped over xmas - but during this time I was offered and used a loaner - "just drop in and pick it up any time you want to go for a kite". I was actually out on his loaner the day my kite was fixed and ready, he bought it down & pumped it up ready to go when I got back to the beach (well I assume one of the instructors was tasked with it)... Good service goes a long way.

Guess who gets my business next time, which is very soon for a new board. IMO support is very important.

Get yourself a Best Kahoona
You can pick them up secondhand really cheap
Plenty of schools in Europe and Usa use them
Rent or buy the biggest widest board that you can get
You wont need the board once your up and running
The biggest hurdle is to get up and running and once you do this your away

Many kite shops offer beginner packages at a saving. Last seasons kites are a good buy as well as preloved kites 1-3 years old in good condition. I'd disagree with Brisbud on Ozone which is my prefered brand.

A lot of beginners around my home beach fly Cabrinha Switchblades or Ozone Catalyst.
