I'm starting out on a Naish 131 board, my question is, am I right in understanding that a longer board, like a 140 or such, would be better for say edging upwind, and a smaller board, like I've got, is better for more free riding type of stuff?

What is the reason for different sizes, and would it be beneficial to have say a 131 and a 140. (Yes I'm trying to give myself a reason to buy a new Vanhunks seeing as they're like down the road from me )

Planing area... you could walk on water, if your feet were big enough - or you could run fast enough.

Assuming you are the average kiter - 75kg - how are you finding the 131 and you kite combo: are you able to ride in the wind ranges of the kite? If not...

Wider, flatter, squarer boards (usually) get going and upwind sooner.

Rule of thumb - width is more important than length for low end.

I'm 64kg on a good day, and 1.81m tall, I'm finding the 131 fine, I don't have a big frame of reference yet though as I'm just starting out.

What would be a recommended length/width for someone who wants to go upwind, but wants to be able to get some decent air as well?

64!!! How about a KFC lunch tray

Seriously though - try all the boards you can get your hands on. Notice how the outline, rocker, tips width, stiffness etc all affect the handling... go from there.

Start around 140x42... being a lighter rider, you might find a smaller step is effective enough...?

(Epic Oxygen might be interesting for you..."

Got myself a 140x42, works pretty nicely now, just need better conditions, advantage is that Kevin Langeree is down here training for king of air, so get to sit on the beach and watch him.
