toddws sounds right regarding the board. 2nd hand if you can, as you're likely to drop down a bit in size once you're more experienced. Comfort is the key with a harness. I bought new when I first started as that was the advice given. The mystic warrior waist harness was really comfy compared to most. Unfortunately, I didn't realise that I'd lose a few kilos after a while and should have gone a medium instead of a large. I've heard this from a few guys now, if you're in between sizes and starting out, go the smaller size if possible.
+1, I started on an XL harness but lost ten kg kiting last season so needed a smaller harness fairly quickly and bought a large. It's now the off season, so I will be starting the new season back on the XL harness
