What are the major advantages/disadvantages of using boot type bindings?

I'm thinking of going that direction for the simple reason, I've got major nerve damage in my one foot from a mx crash, its had to get reconstructed twice, now the bloodflow etc to the foot isn't the greatest, and in both my normal binding boards I've been using so far my foot just gets rubbed through the skin, and then takes one knock on the board while slipping out which bursts a part open, in the past month have had to get 2 big holes stitched up on it, not ideal.

I'm looking at the below ones:

Boot Bindings have a few advantages. 1: The board doesn't fall off as easily especially when trying wakestyle tricks. 2: You have a 1 to 1 connection to you board so you have easier carve control and board control in general (your heel doesn't leave the board like with straps). 3: Less body dragging when you crash (You still come out sometimes) 4: In general just makes doing big Load & Pop 10 x easier

There are some disadvantages too. 1: You crash harder (excluding times when the board hits you after coming off, that happens significantly less). 2: Can feel a bit more rigid at first since you don't have too much twist capability.

Not sure about your specific issue though. Sometimes the bindings can be very tight and reduce bloodflow, not sure if that is a problem for you.

Bindings are great they have a lot more support, comfort and you don't have to worry about losing your board. But I still prefer straps in lighter winds.

I'm doing the same pro/cons list at the moment too man. although your situation is pretty unique, I like the idea of more secure footing. the only con not listed here is the old snowboard/wakeboard issue of knee damage from twisting landings. the ninja above mentioned you still come out sometimes so maybe it's a bit more forgiving than snowboard bindings... Magenta Ninja, can you elaborate on how secure your foot is in the biding on a TT?

Cheers

Boots are great in flat water but straps are nicer in rough chop / waves and light wind.

Ah, what would be the reason that straps work better in chop?

You have more freedom of movement in straps which means you can absorb the roughness of riding through chop, don't get me wrong riding boots in chop is still ok I just personally find it more comfortable in straps though. But if you have a nice flat water spot then boots all the way. Boots are the sort of thing you just have to try you may like them you may not, I ride boots and straps. Boots in flat water and straps in light winds or waves.

So the retailer stuffed up and I didn't receive them. Going eBay route now, question: Are the hole spacings universal on pretty much all bindings? Like would the liquid forces fit my VanHunks board, or a Naish board etc?

Depends on the year of the board and the boots

Also be aware not all boards are made to take the impact of boots riding, you need some stiffness at least in the mid board area. Boots uusally are compatible, hyperlite bindings are not always. Riding boots is great but I met a lot of people injuring themselves heavily and even gping back to straps for that matter. The coming off depends on how you tighten the boots. If you come off too easy you have the same old strap (one foot out ankle or knee injury) risk. If you don't come off (the rule) you can catch an edge faster which leads to heavier crashes. Twisting knees can happen with both straps and boots. Boots will make you ride more powered which is fun if you are into wakestyle flatwater things and imo it is worth the risk. Straps give you more movement which for some tricks (blind etc) can be beneficial but you get used to it. When in trouble, it takes a bit longer to get rid of the board.

should be 6 1/2" spacing on modern boots

So I opted for an additional board to go with the bindings, my current 132 is extremely light, by far the lightest board I've come across so a bit hesitant to strap boots on them, went with the Airush Livewire 135, and Liquid Force BOB Soven bindings, I was specifically looking for an open toe binding. Super keen to test it out next weekend!
