Hi, I’m a 60-something year old beginner (sort of, about 15 hours in the water) from LA (used to live in Canberra) and will be spending a couple of weeks near Byron at the end of October. Any advice on what the kitesurfing conditions will be like at that time of year, where I might go and whether or not it will be worth it to drag my board, kite and sorry ar** over there would be appreciated.
Obviously I would prefer to kite with other kiters and find out local rules, conditions etc. One specific question I have but can’t find much info on - my impression from the NSWKA site is that insurance is compulsory. Is this actually the case? Any other advice? Thanks.

Hello Thurin, Our weather on the East Coast around Byron is hit and miss. I have lived at Lennox Head (just south of Byron) and now live at the southern end of the Gold Coast.

It can be excellent. There is no flat water so it you are a beginner it is probably best to leave your gear at home unless you are use to riding in the waves.

Here is a link to the daily weather from last year:

Not sure about the insurance however I don't think so.

Thanks Kenno, your reply is helpful. I'll guess I'll leave my gear at home this time around, maybe just do some regular surfing instead. If anyone else has info on the insurance issue I'd appreciate it.

Hi Thurin,
12 and 9m should see you kitesurfing most days then.
Bring a bigger board as it is all wave affected and you are new.
No insurance necessary, Clarke's, belongil and North Byron for Northerlies, if it's too strong head up the coast where it will get a few knots less.
Tallow's for the Southerly.
Pm me for any further info.

Thanks all for the advice. I splashed out and bought a golf deceiver bag for the plane but still need to refill my shark repellent. In LA Long Beach, sting rays are a real issue just not quite so deadly. Happy to help out if anyone happens to be in LA next summer.
