Hello, I want to start Kite surfing and saw an add for cheap.
It's a 2003 Cabrinha CO2 12m Kite with Cabrinha board, harness, etc all barley seen daylight.
Just need some opinions if this would be ok to start and learn with?

Thanks in advance, Ollie

Ermmm.... there's probably a heap of kit out there that's gonna make life easier than this set up.

Try from 2007 and newer, kites got better

Don't waste your money and as said get 2007, I'd day 2009 or newer even. CO2 was my first kite back in the days but I would not recommend anyone going through the same slow progression trying to fight that piece of xxxx

do not bother. waste of money. gear is much more advanced, safer and easier to ride than what it was 10 years ago. DO NOT BUY!

Ok thanks for the prompt response.
It's all for $200, is it worth buying it and getting a another kite or is the board, harness, ropes, bar no good ether?

Depends on your finances mate, board and harness might be Ok if cash is tight but forget the kite bar and lines.
There's good deals around on better gear if you can afford to spend a bit more

I don't want to spend much on my first setup, maybe $500-600 in the goldcoast/Brisbane area. I found an 08 model for $695, might talk him down.

People go cheap and really do themselves an injustice with regards to learning i wouldn't spend less than 1000 to 1500 for a first kit but if you can hang out till september all the new season kites will be out and the previous seasons gear will be just that little cheaper and you should be able to get a '11 model or even a later model for cheaper than you can now. you do really get what you pay for in this sport. id also look at buying through a shop too and not ebay as they can advise on the correct size kite, board and harness for you.

Now I'm confused because I just read somewhere to buy cheap because you'll trash your first kite. I found an 08 Waroo with board and all, only taken out once, for $600. Heaps on Gumtree of people that buy a setup but never get into it or have the time. I'd probably quickly upgrade.

1000-1500 for a complete kit is defiantly not expensive in this sport, last board i brought was a wakestyle board and it cost me with boots a little over 1000 by itself (obviously i brought new) last year i also brought a 8m best ts kite only for about $1200, which in my opinion was a good deal. To give you a little comparison i spent 3000 on my first kit a few years ago, but i treated it well and it lasted me a fair while and sold it for a good price, i just didnt want to have to upgrade after 2 or 3 months of riding because the kit i brought was holding me back.

Ollie,
buy cheap as in do not get the latest and greatest 2014 model. If the stuff you buy is "very cheap" because it's been used quite a bit you could end up with leaking valves, unevenly stretched lines, canopy wear which is going to delay your progression. Make sure to get a kite that can be trimmed (aka depower) and that the safety release is current, say from 2009/10.

If you want peace of mind go for a new, superseded model that's lying on a shelf somewhere or get an experienced kiter to look at the second hand gear you plan to buy.
Good luck!

Haha ok thanks, I'll head to the coast this weekend and check out some shops and see what training there is. Does anyone have any suggestions on what shops at the goldcoast are good and who to go with for lessons?
Thanks for all your help, you have probably saved me a bit of money and time.

Where in QLD are you? are you closer to Brisbane or Goldie?

Brissy you have Kitepower, Briskites and surf connect all located between sandgate and clontarf
Goldie you have surf fx at southport and i dont know any others, though im sure the gold coast crew can help you out with that one

Go to Surf Fx on Ferry Road, Southport at the Goldy. They are a site sponsor here on Seabreeze, give great advice on all you need to know and have a huge range of new and second hand gear

I live about half way between the goldcoast and the city, don't mind travelling but I prefer the goldcoast over the city. I've got a few days off, I'll check them all out.

he might have just saved your life too. Get lessons - SERIOUSLY!

If you can't afford then kiteboarding isn't for you. Nothing cheap about this sport
