Long time Lurker, first time poster!!!

I first thought of kite surfing way back, probably 10 years ago. Well the times come to do it! After spending many years flying RC Planes, Having a crack in full size gliders, and being a full time worker doing up to 12hr days, and soccer coach 4 days a week, tomorrow I get on the board! Did lesson 1 of the 3 step program awhile ago, lesson 2 last week(body drags etc) and tomorrow arvo up n riding hopefully. AND IM EXCITED(said like Big Kev from the ol' infomercials!!)
Got a new 2013 14mtr rebel, North Gambler 2013 board harness etc outta my tax return this year. And am looking forward to getting it out tomorrow with my instructor(Vicky) to try get up n riding.
I CANT WAIT

Cheers Steve

Welcome to the big ocean and the power of wind I to was a rc plane person but mainly pylon racing . I started kiting 4 years ago after giving the planes the flick took a while but stick with it .There is nothing like cutting up wind for the first time. Finshing wear you started from. The best thing is after the first cost it only cost is upgradibg because wind cost nothing. Good luck and happy winds and dont forget to talk to other kiters and watch what they do ask lots of questions you will find we are very approach able and helpful.

Well that was bloody hard!!
2 Hr lesson on trying to get up on the board, and managed to about 3 times for a total distance of about 5mtrs. Heaps of frustrating almosts/faceplants/slumping back in the water etc. Biggest difficulty I found was getting set to ride.,ie kite to 12, lay back, feet into the board. Being round in the middle, and wearing life jacket aswell as harness it was nigh on impossible to "crunch"myself enough to get into position and maintain kite position, and get feet into the straps.
On the plus, I keep replaying in my head how it felt when I got up, and what I think was the problem when I didn't. Board position when I didn't get up I think was a major factor, too cross wind in direction lead to me going over the front of the board too many times(I think).
Now just need to get a heap more practice, still have another 1hr of paid in advance lessons to go, and fingers crossed it clicks.
Cheers Steve

Hi Steve
I doubt it will ( click ) on your next lesson,I hope it does, but frustrating time on the water is what you need.
Maybe if you have a shallow body of water near by that is kitable use it as I found that if you can sit on the sand ( knee deep water ) life is sooo much easier to learn everything about keeping the kite in position while you get the board onto your feet. When you fall off you just walk back to your board to retrieve it.
I hope you are ready to give some of your 12 hrs work days up because once it does click you will be addicted and work just gets in the way.
Oh yea get the progression learner kitesurf dvd it will assist you heaps..
Cheers Finger.

I'd even try deliberatly not getting going for the first bit, just practice diving the kite letting it lift you out of the water then fall back in. Rinse repeat till you feel like you have feet, hands and board under control. Most people don't realise its not the first downstroke that keeps you going it's the first upstroke which is a hard place to get to if you don't have your board under control. The 14 is a big arse kite as well so if you're a big guy you will need to have the pig tails on the fast turn setting and be ready to give it a good old yank through the turns. Trainer kite is good to practice that move.

It will click and when it does, the only thing you will be thinking about is how to get out of your 12 hour day to go kiting every time there is a wind.

I had that at the end of my second lesson but i was too rooted to keep trying as id already done 1hr 1/2. There is a sweet spot between getting faceplanted and falling back into the water. I got moving a few times but fell back like you have.
That part of getting set to go is a pain, especially as you are floating i found exactly the same thing as you did. I could not crunch up enough to get both feet in.
Also exactly the same as you with going Cross (upwind) instead of pointing the board at the kite.
Frustrating yeaahh but like learning to ride a bike or drive a car.

I havent been able to get back out due to familly and work stuff happening so ill be getting a 3rd lesson very soon.

Makes sense what you say Dl33ta about the upstroke, gotta get past the first stroke into the power zone though still on the board

Thanks for the words of advice guys. Can't wait to get out n get some more practice. Gotta find a learner friendly spot on the east/south side of Melbourne and keep on trying. Still got an hr up my sleeve, but that's at a set location, so if the wind is off then no go. So will be trying to find a spot elsewhere just to try work on getting the movements right before power stroking the kite and try work on not face planting as much.

I'm still new,
when I run the kite from 11 to 1 I would always faceplant,
now I do the same but once I'm on the board I sheet the bar out,
then sheet back in and dive the kite,
you lose heaps of power and the whole thing feels much easier

Can't tell you how well it makes me feel reading about all of these experiences here, since I'm going through exactly the same frustrations. I'll keep pushing though.

I feel you brother, i did the lessons in Bali, and my mates had a go at me saying "there wont be a kite big enough in Bali for you" when i came back they all had a good chuckle coz it was true, the only day i had avail the wind must have been below 12 or 15 but i could not get going with a 16m kite, i weigh 105kg`s that doesnt help, but i got up for about 30 m and my skill flying the kite not there yet could not gain enough speed to stay up. But yes i`m also looking forward to get out and see if this pot belly pig can strutt his stuff with the gifted guys out there that makes it look so dam easy.Happy kiting, see you out there.

I started back in april. One of the things that was great for me was getting a big board early on. Originally i started on a 137x41 @ 84kgs which came with my 12 metre kite. I really struggled to get going once up as i'd just loose speed and bob back down in the water or i'd try and do a harder power stroke and end up flying like superman face first into the water.
I bought a 2nd hand lightwind board 146 x 45 for a couple of hundred dollars. It was 8-10 years old and very flat so nothing fancy. This made it heaps easier to get up as the power stroke didn't need to be as full on to get me going which helped to get used to the whole motion. Plus it was alot more forgiving if i didn't quite get it right.
It also allowed me to concentrate on the kite once up as the wider board just cruises and you can then play with diving the kite, pulling the bar in/out etc.. to get the feel of it whilst up without tea bagging to much in the water.
I ride the smaller board now reasonably comfortably (still stacking plenty and making a gumby out of myself with the odd superman face plant for good measure), but have to say i think it would have taken me alot longer without using the bigger board.

Good luck though it's all worth it. There were some pretty frustrating days and i'm sure there still will be but it is extremely addictive and worth it once your up and going.

Cheers
