Just recently started Kiting and was looking at getting away to the Cocos islands with Zephyre Kite tours in August. Has anyone been to Cocos Islands as a beginner or can anyone give me some advice as to whether it would be a good destination to learn? Also is August a good time of year for Cocos.

Thanks!

I was there a few years ago in August. Mike Walker was there giving lessons for Jen from Zephyr. Three girls from Perth went from raw beginner to competent in a week despite consuming copious quantities of alcohol each night.

The lagoon is shallow and the wind is very consistant. You can stand up in waist deep water anywhere. Only thing is that the sand is coral based so any cut or scratch needs immediate attention and your knees will take some punishment in the shallows while you're learning. Definitely take booties, they are a must as Jen will tell you. No one kites Cocos without them - too much coral.

Just came back from there. You will improve out of sight as the conditions are so good. Locals are cool & willing to help.

Wow! This sounds just the place for our next holiday. Do you recommend a good time of the year to catch 15 to 20knot trade winds? Nothing over 25knots please! Also what resort would you recommend please or a travel agent to talk to that knows kiting and Cocos like the back of their hand? Much appreciated.

Castaway Cocos, try & get the ocean view cabins. It's right across the road from the Cocos club. Self contained & prices are reasonable. You'll have a blast. The winds are warm so not quite as powerful.
