hey guys

I'm making the switch form my windsurfer onto a kitesurfer. I'm about 70kg and 180cm. Could anyone recommend kite size and board size that's going to suit me as a beginner and any other info that might be necessary.

cheers

Gear size (especially kite) depends on your local conditions, but as a guide, at your size in Melbourne go for a 10m, Brisbane or Sydney 11m or 12m, Perth a 9m. These are rough numbers that will maximise your initial time on water for typical summer conditions. However if we get another strong La Nina then maybe another metre or so on the East coast.

First board, between 135-140 x 41-43.

Your instructor will/should be a good source of advice too.

djdojo is pretty spot on regarding the kite size, though certain kites have a bit more pull than others, try before you buy if possible. Where are you located? At 70 kg you could go as small as 132 on the board. I'm 82kg and fly a 10m bandit dos most of the time on a Cardboard freeride 134 in ordinary QLD condition of 11-16 knts.

You need to forget about waterstarting by pulling yourself up with your arms. Thats the main bad habit to get rid of.

In kitesurfing, you just sheet the kite and steer with the bar.

When waterstarting, think of using the bar to create the pull on your harness hook from the centreline.

First, learn to fly a kite!!!
Get a trainer kite, learn to fly it really well BEFORE you get a kitesurfing kite, or get any lessons.

At 70kgs, the best size kite for you to get will be something thats suits your weight and the average winds you get in your area. East Coast, twin tip, on flat water - something around 11/12M, Surfboard drop 1-2M
West Coast Drop another 1-2M
Start with a larger TT or surfboard, something around 1.35 - 1.45, then when you can ride upwind, get something smaller (1.25x37/38 - 1.32x39/40/41) and either sell the larger board (and get an even bigger one for light winds)
