I'm wondering if you guys can tell me how much difference an extra 5cm makes to a twin tip.

Take for example, two twin tip boards of the same brand, one measures 135x41cm and the other 140x42cm.

Does the extra 5cm in length and 1cm in width really make that much difference and if so, what sort of differences in handling etc does it really make?

I hope someone can tell me, as on the face of it, 5cm on the length & 1cm on the width is really stuff all of a difference, get your ruler out & have a look, it seems next to nothing.

Cheers.

always wondered this too. 2.5cm added onto each end doesnt seem like it would do too much.

My smaller board fits into the back of the car a lot easier.

Ignoring rocker the extra length will require more foot pressure to give comparable pop.

A longer board will get going in less wind and be better going upwind but more of a handful in stronger winds.

5cm? ...yes you'll definitely notice the difference.

Think of it in this way,

135x41cm= 5535cm2
140x42cm= 5880cm2

That is 345cm2 more on your board, that is if squared 18.5cm2, almost two extra feet on your board, so it ends up to be quite a lot, so I agree with moon waxing...

I haven't got a board in front of me, but on a rough calc on the two sizes I mentioned above, shows an additional 0.031m2 of area.

It's crazy isn't it?
But you've got to be right, otherwise I'm sure the manfacturers wouldn't be making boards with such seeminly small differences.

Whoops, you beat me to the calc, that's what I get for posting at work.
now we've just got to figure out who's is right...

Width yes - length.. not so much. Just ask ya.. er.. kite shop.

In the dimensions you sent the extra 1cm of width would add approx as much (if the length stayed the same) as the extra 5cm of length.

Actually I think most folks work on an extra 1 inch of width being equal to 3 inches length. So i guess you should be thinking of that 140cm board as being approx 15cm longer than the 135 - if ya know what I mean.

Ok, I think I got ya; so if the length is not as crucial as the width, then the width difference of the 1cm shouldn't make that much difference between the board sizes I mentioned?

Depends on how the boards are built really.

Aside from width and length there is always outline, concave, rocker, flex etc. to make even the "same" board very different beasts in the water.

Just ride them both and see

Hehe, she's right, but when it comes to my kiting skills at the moment, it is a bit of an overstatement...:)

10mm in width makes a big difference on a windsurfer, which is a much smaller change percentage wise.

when you talk width, the critical measurement is about leverage of your heal on the heal side edge. Actually it's the other way round.

your heal is wanting to set the edge in the water at an angle appropriate to what you want the board to achieve. This means overcoming the opposing force of water pressure trying to flatten out the board via pressing also on the heal side edge.

Now think where your heal is in relation to the edge of the board and lets say it's 5cm

increase the board width two cm and that distance is now 6cm. But it is a Lever arm so I'll let the Engineering students work out the Torque difference.

needless to say 1cm is a big difference.
