Hey guys,
I'm trying to figure out how exactly haze inland affects the wind at the coast. I live in Kuala Lumpur, and it has been really hazey lately. We know that sea breeze develops when land gets heated up by the sun faster than the sea water. So hot air rises causes air from sea to rush into land.
Ok pretty straight forward.
Now what will happen if you introduce haze? It pretty much reflects the suns heat back to space. But then we have the heat created in the city which becomes trapped by the haze.
My theory with haze is we get less of the heating/cooling by the sun/sea. Instead the haze captures the heat making flutuation of temperature to be smaller thoughout the day/night. This would result in less seabreeze?

Anyone else has any idea on this? What will happen to the magnitude of sea breeze if land is blacketed by haze?

Many say haze (airborne particles) also slows global warming by blocking incoming solar radiation
Your hypothesis is plausible

Will mess it up, i've seen smoke from bushfires kill a Seabreeze.

right now you've got a sea temp of 29 degrees and an air temp of 29 degrees, a whopping 3 knot breeze with 79% humidity. Day or night you don't have the temp differential to get a Seabreeze, but you live there so you know there is a more chance of a sea breeze than a good run in peak hour traffic.

Ive never seen KL with clear skies and no haze/smog, does it actually happen?

but without any scientific basis I'd be thinking the haze/smog would do a thoroughly good job of smothering whatever is happening with the wind and just keep it as a stinking hot and humid day, leaving you begging for the arvo thunderstorm to provide some variety (unless you have to commute in it).

ahah yeah it totally messed up the wind build up. We mostly rely on regional wind rather than seabreeze really. The added 5-2kts seabreeze is just an added bonus. There are some days where you see clear skies with cirrocumulus clouds in the morning. This is where we know if theres external wind system coming in, it'd be a good day at the coast. But whatever, next month's east monsoon season and the 4 months wait will be over. Can't wait!
