Hello, I'm 70kg, wondering if going out in 14knots would work if I'm flying a 10m kite.

Cheers, Jukesy

I guess that depends on the size respectively type of your board (e.g. twintip/surfboard/hydrofoil/raceboard) as well on your skill level. The kite will certainly fly under this condition but if you have a too small board you will definitely need to get a sonar.

cheers

Short answer, no.

I'm 75kg and 14knots is boring but doable on a 13m and that's constantly working the kite to stay upwind. I can get up on the board on my 10 but not much else and I'll end up a long way downwind.

Better off waiting until it picks to 17-18knots preferably 20, especially when your beginning. It may not seem like much but it makes a big difference.

If it is 14 gusting to 17+ then you'll be fine - won't be much for jumping but you should be able to mow the lawn and just go upwind.
I would be on my 14m in these conditions though @ 70kgs

Even if it's weak and you end up downwind a bit, it's good for practice. Just keep going into shore and running back upwind.

Yeah get into I say. I'm 82kg and can still have fun on my 11m down to about 15knts (as long as it's gusting 17knts+). Anything below that and I'm drifting downwind too much. I actually enjoy light wind riding, more cruisy and is a subtle art.

Actually as a beginner this was one of the more annoying things to get my head around - light winds is actually harder to deal with than stronger winds (i.e. 25knts).

most people have no real idea of what the wind strength really is, most seem to be exaggerating what is really happening. Gat out there and see how you go, you will quickly lean to judge by feel what size works for you. Check what others are using, always a good guide.

written opinions here are just that, it's what works for you and your skill level etc. I'm 85 kg and my go to kite is a 10m switchy which I use when most use 12s.

imo it’s important to learn how to fly the kite in light wind.

You'll need to quote the width as well as the length (brand helps as well).

e.g. My light (er) wind board is a 120cm Juice fatboy which at 48 wide with a fairly flat rocker is good enough to get me going in lighter conditions. That said I take the landboard out instead if its less than 12knots.

I'm not sure what the width is as I just got it today. ( Very much appreciated, THE DONG.) I know it's a RRD Martin Model 132.

It's up to u jukesy. If you wanna ride that board you can wait around for 17kts.
If you wanna get out as much as possible get another board. General rule is bigger the surface area, lighter the wind.
There are big boy TT's that will get you down to 15 kts and LW TT's that will get you down to 13. I'd go one of the latter, but that's me.
They're way harder to pop and some of them won't do even that, but you're out there and you can still throw tricks if you learn
how to throw your shoulders and send the kite.

Yeah, the bigger boards are better but won't I outgrow it super quickly if I progress fast?

Outgrowing a board and either selling it to the next newbie or putting it away for low wind days is a great outcome.

Taking a whole year to grow into your ideal board is not so good.

True, but the problem is I can't afford another board at the moment.

It all takes time. After a year or 2 you will have boards and kites for all conditions. And if you don't your not taking the sport seriously enough lol.
