This is the time of year to get a good deal on a kite as shops will usually give you a good deal as new season gear will be coming out. Should also be able to pick up some bargains on second hand gear as well. As for the holiday, if it was me i;d go for it and then look for second hand gear later later on.

So with the windless season upon us, I've been looking at one of these kitesurfing holidays up North or abroad but at the moment I'm just rolling with a 15m kite after my 12m fell apart. In the last year with work blah blah I've only managed to get out for about 5 or 6 hours (altogether ) so would really like to just get some decent hours under my belt.

Unfortunately the world revolves around $$$ so my options are:

- Buy a 10 or 11m kite and hope that a big board can bridge the 4 or 5m gap (Or just go for a 12)

- Head up to Kite surfari or wherever, hire a kite if need be and get a years worth of kiting in an awesome location in but then fairly restricted for the rest of the year back on the Gold Coast

I'm leaning towards the buy a kite option but don't want to end up with 2 kites sitting around hardly ever being used so just interested to see other's opinions

Hi, i don't know your budget or what the conditions are like where you are or the likelihood of it changing.however I have faced a similar dilemma before. Go with mates on an overseas holiday or get gear? My preference was gear. In theory, a one off cost for gear will enable many more sessions/experiences than the holiday (conditions permitting). And it may cost less since it could be traded later on. It would be frustrating if local conditions change when you return. Is there a compromise option? A road trip with new/used gear? For me it's all about maximising time on the water. So my order of purchases were: gear to get on water in most conditions here: 12m/twin tip, 9m for higher winds, surf board lighter winds, 18m very light wind (most of that was used). I don't mean to complicate things but is it worth exploring trading the 15m for something like a 17m zephyr which has a legendary wind range that would cover both your 12m and 15m. Good luck! Si

Holiday man. You can score cheap gear from $100 sometimes - almost any time. But a holiday where there is going to be a lot of wind (Kalpatiya is my fav), mate you can't go wrong. Come back with a smile bigger than a chook!
