Hi Guys,

As a pretty average twin tipper, how easy is it to start going with a surf board. At this stage just wanting to get out past the waves and stay upwind. Learning to carve through the waves I suspect would we well out of reach.

I have a 9M North Vegas up for sale, sad to sell as it is a great kite. It is however small given my weight and the Sydney Northern beaches light winds. I was thinking I might like to keep it and give surfboarding a go?

How important is the type of board. I have a fish (6.5ft) and a mini mal (7.5 ft) (even have my kids 5.5 foamie!) would I be able to use these in 3ft of swell and 15 knot winds (I weigh 90Kg). Or would the fact that I am using a large board mean I am bounced about to much? Does the size of board you are on effect the ability to stay up wind?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Matthew.

Start out in small surf in plenty of wind... The same wind as you normally would ride with a twintip...

You hear about all this business of getting going earlier/lighter/sooner on a surfboard - but in reality it takes 2-3 months of riding a surfboard to get the hang of it - and only then will the light wind benefits open up to you.

Start out on your 6"5 fish - but in my experience the fish boards don't work too well behind a kite - the rails are too soft and wide up on the nose which makes for a funny feeling board. The foamies don't work due to not having real fins...

Try it out on your fish first - see if you like it :) Then go grab a cheapie shortboard from your local surf shop to really get into it

what board size can you recommend for 85kg person? Same location (Sydney Northern Beaches) 5.1ft - is it too small?

5"1 is probably too small - But try it and see - what've you got to lose
It's still bigger than a twintip so it'll work fine - Just won't have as much float on the wave face...
