Hey guys,

I'm a 21 year old Dutch girl who is traveling to Australia in a couple of months. I really would love to get into kitesurfing in Australia and spend my time learning it for about three months. I would love to pick it up after that in the Netherlands.

However, I have a couple of questions and I hope some of you could help me!

I would happily spend my money on lessons, but as you can imagine three months of lessons would just be too expensive. Is it best to find something like a buddy who could help me after I've done some lessons, or what are you tips on this?

Same goes for gear. It is too expensive to buy gear for just three months. If I really want to buy gear I would do it in the Netherlands when I'm back from my travels. Is it expensive to hire gear, or what other options do I have?

And finally, what would be some good place to go to for beginners (and as a traveller)? I read that the western coast of Australia is perfect for kitesurfing, but are there any specific places?

Many thanks in advance!
Anne Maartje

I suggest buying your gear in Australia. Buy 2nd hand or last years gear. Best goto a kite shop if you are a newby as they will help you and be around to answer your questions and fix you up if things go wrong with your kit. The nice thing about kite gear is its easy to travel with so you'll be able to take it back home with you easily. You'll have a ball in WA!

I agree with all of the above - 3 months of lesson is very unnecessary and crazy expensive. Have enough lessons to be able to operate the gear safely and ride on the board... everything else comes with practice. When the wind is up most locations in Perth have plenty of kiters and people to help you launch and land your kite. The Seabreeze site has meetups and you can quickly make new friends to go kiting with.

Try the kite shops for 2nd hand gear but dont forget you can also search the Seabreeze buy/sell guide for kites in WA which is where I have bought all my kites from ... usually ALOT cheaper than the stores, however you need to be comfortable and confident examining the gear, if not take someone with you who knows what they're doing.

Oh and almost forgot, most places wont let you hire gear unless you have an IKO certification and have reached a certain level of competence ...

If you go to the WAKSA website or google WAKSA locations you'll find the a list of places to kite in and around Perth ...

Good luck

You'll learn and progress at quieter locations, in 2 months our season will be well and truly starting, as you'll find out Europe is a lot less expensive for everything inc kiting gear especially new, however the are plenty of good deals on second hand and last year or the years before stock, all brands do a good starter to intermediate kite, if you want to learn in the perfect spot check out exmouth kite centre, run by tom and Jana 1 on 1 teaching on near deserted shallow water ,enjoy west australia

when i went to compare prices in ireland i found them to be equal as here. however as you'll be chanign from euro to AUD it would maybe be better to purcahse before you come over. the soul kite guys at melville are good to learn with, you will only need 4 or 5 hours tops. after that just practise heaps... i trip up north would be your best bet if you can mange to get a few friends together to ptich in for fuel.

Thank you all guys! You've all been so helpful.
So western australia it is. First I'll take some lessons and after that I just need to find a buddy.
Gear will be alright, I'll either borrow some, or buy some and sell them after the summer!

I agree with others. Take initial lessons, Buy 1 or 2 year old second hand gear or ex demo gear and head to the beach.

Your super hot so there'll be a line of blokes happy to help you out.

WA!? Bad choice. East coast QLD and Far North is far better. We have plenty of crocs, bull sharks, turtles and stingers to play with. What could be more fun than that!?

Try Brisbane! It's a great place too learn and there's heaps of good spots and guys/gals too kite with. You don't even have to lock your car..or worry about someone stealing your gear... Or kite/ windsurf rage!

I'm just telling it how it is man. The reality is that blokes love to help out attractive women! She will more easily get assistance compared to your average middle aged overweight bloke trying to learn. It is what it is!

Ps What is it with all those animals trying to kill you in Aus? New Zealand doesn't have any animals trying to eat you.... just the occasional tornado, earthquake or eruption.... nothing to worry about .

Lots of wind though!....

Mate you are spot on! We have the Deadly 60 up here from Cone shells with barbs more poisonous than licking the balls of a bull, to crocs that don't kill you, they head butt you first, bite, take a chunk out, taste you and then decide to eat you! Oh and lets' not forget bull sharks that are just like Pitt Bull terriers loving nothing more than to bite. And tiger sharks but thankfully they come out at night. Oh and 3mt pythons to strangle your kids, and to make it just a little bit worse than it already is, the killer of all killers that probably gives blokes pancreatic cancer - XXXX beer! The worst piss invented since mud water by the side of the road during a drought!

Actually we have those at Pallarenda. The coconuts are so uncanny when they fall just when German n French tourists are trying to get to the beach! They don't fall when the Spaniards go there. Weird ay!?

We have 360 degree (all) wind directions covered in Port Phillip Bay in Victoria and some good wave locations too. Worth a visit if you are passing by.
