Hi guys.
I am more convinced that helmets are a MUST at least for beginners. And they don't have to be daggy or way off the cool stakes.
Any advice on where around Melbourne they are best sold and with a wide range of designs? Also, do they have the same ASO rating as say bicycle helmets or what rating should they conform to?
Thank you in advance.

Gath helmets are good, are Australian made (I think), and have a wide range of styles.

THEZU on the st kilda foreshore have them.

There was quite a few competitors wearing them in the KBV comp, so not just beginners think they are good.

Radz helmets look the goods for impacts, on my Gath helmet it states that its not intended to protect from impacts, only to protect from weather.

The garth helmets from the link given say they are good for impact. I think it's something i will be buying and using when my lessons are done.

My Gath helmet is certainly designed for impact. Never known a helmet manufacturer design purely for keeping weather out!

That said, the model I have has those handy removable ear protector flaps that can be left in, vented or unvented or taken off completely. They come in handy in the cold winter winds as another barrier to stop cold wind whistling down wet ear canals. Coupled with a pair of earplugs, it does the job very well. They would also save some pain if you received a blow to the ear area from a board edge or fin etc.

Gath recently had some helmets on eBay. Brand new with minor marks sold as factory seconds.. Cheap alternative to buying new?? About 45 clams + 10 delivery..

Ive been kiting around 5 years now and only bought my helmet last year, rockin a Bern, I haven't been pushing myself in kiting until now and the helmet gives me confidence in most situations.
Helmets aren't a beginners tool they are a life tool. I've heard and seen so many accidents that could have been limited just from wearing a lid (and getting some lessons).
The reason I haven't owned one until now is pure laziness.
Coming to Australia has given me awesome opportunities to kite and (touch wood) I don't think I've had a serious issue while wearing it. It has a few dings mostly from travel but a few where my board has decided to comment on how silly falling off it was.
I don't wear my it all the time because I'm not competent, I wear it for that one split second where it turns to **** in heart beat.

Also advise on buying, I was going to buy online but went to my local kitesurf shop in the UK, tried on everything he had to find the best fit. Obviously size will vary between different makes but I found that some were the right size but uncomfortable within the same range. The Best Fit is always best.

Thanks,
Rob.L

I use the Radz for windsurfing. I've been hit on the head a couple of times by a mast and it opened a cut once, so it will be useful if I get a repeat of that.
I will also wear it in winter over my integrated wetsuit hood for kiting.

I have a gath surf and it would be less draggy in an impact on water than the Radz and I wear it for kiting when its warm enough. Its a snug fit.

Hey Rob,

What bern are you using?

Never thought the Gaths would be useful in a serious inpact - just board deflections

Hey, I wear a bern helmet that's rated for surf and snow. You can go on www.eve.com to order from the US. Impact vests also go cheap from there

I was using an old Gath for a while, but am now using a Protec B2 Wake.

It has good padding and removable ear flaps. They come in a variety of colours.

I like the fit, it holds my sunglasses on, and its nice to have on for big stacks.

I think its the Bern Macon, Brown and Orange.
Has detachable ear flaps for chilly days. Highly recommended, very comfortable.

Hi Guys,

Gath have a range of different helmets, the basic surfing one is not rated for impact. We stock, use and sell the Protec which are a great helmet for water sports. Mostly designed for wake boarding, they are indeed made for impact.

They have the hard shell with dual density EVA foam padding all the way around, water drain holes and a good fit system as well as removable EVA ear guards.

There are four main styles Classic, B2, Ace Wake and Two Face (reversible). Many colours and all top quality.

Bike helmets are not appropriate for water sport, they are a thin shell using a EPS foam which crushes on impact with hard objects, they are a throw away after a big hit. Water is less dense and so a softer foam is required.

Great helmets
