the best bet mate is to get some lessons and then the instructor will be able to help you out with what type of gear you need !!!!!!! happy kitting

Please, Do yourself and your local kiting crew a favour and don't try and use those old kites before you can kite safely on current gear.

Ask around and you'll see what I mean.

Plenty of kite schools In Perth area to choose from.

that 12 meter kite sounds like a bit of a death trap. just be careful, maybe have a word with the schools... they'll be happy to help steer you away from your old gear..... lessons if only one or two...will make a big difference... if even just to show you the difference betweeen new and old

If you are just leaning don't go out on that old 12m. Use the 7. If it's from 04 it's still nowhere near as safe as modren kites but at least it shouldn't have huge power.

I reckon 12/7 is probably about right is a good pair in WA. Depends on your local conditions. But yeah, get some lessons and have someone take a look at your gear.

Budget is open i guess but, I dont want to spend heaps if i am going to upgrade my gear after 12months. Would like to look at getting a large board to learn on and later take to the surf then look at a smaler board later to use on the flat water.

Thats my idea but im not sure? hence asking for some info to make a choice.

Thanks

Everyone will have their own opinions but I would suggest you go with a Switchblade IDS (4) so a 2009 Model should be able to pick one up 2nd hand for about a grand...... The quality of the kites is excellent, they are no fuss and easy to use, there are heaps of them out there so pricing on the second hand market should be quite good, this kite assuming you dont trash it should last a few seasons at least. As an all round kite they are excellent.

Consider keeping both the 7m kite and the 127 Board...... the 127 will probably be a bit small to learn on but will be fine once you are confident ( I started on a 138 and my second board was a 126 ( cardboards ) I was about your weight at the time) ..... you probably would not get much for it if you sell it so I would just keep it or pass it on to a mate to borrow when you get a new one.

Check the buy and sell here on seabreeze for a 134cm - 138cm board should be able to pick up something decent for around 400 -500.... so for $1500 all up you will have a decent kit that will last a few seasons and is easy to build upon.

good luck
