Hi I had my first winter kite session at Safety bay on Sunday and it was fantastic! Great to be out on the the water again since my last session was the 1st week of May.

I only started the sport mid way through last summer so I'm still trying to learn the best methods for dealing with gusts. I know winter winds aren't as predictable as the summer sea breezes so I have looked on the internet and asked people what to do in the big gusts but I have been given advice which seems to be conflicting. Some people say to bear off downwind when a gust hits to depower the kite a bit but you lose ground downwind doing that naturally which isn't something I want to keep doing. Whereas other people say to engage the edge hard and to just ride it out. When I try edging hard though it powers up the lines and I sometimes find the board skipping across the top of the chop and it can be hard to engage the rail in a controlled way.

If anyone has a moment to give me their views or a comparision of both methods I would be very grateful!

Cheers

In winter the the wind is generally more frontal and gustier as a result you need to be sure you have the right kite size for the conditions. unlike summer where you can rig for the low end of the wind and ride out the gusts you need to rig for the higher end of the wind, this will mean you won't be as overpowered when the squalls come through although you will be underpowered at times.
edging is the best way to control gusts, if you are skipping downwind it could be your board or your posture. when riding do you look like a C or a 7? ensure your chest is back as this will get your edge locked in.

Keep your kite low too, this will help you keep your edge.

-Sheet Out
-Kite low
-Edge like a b@stard

If you're still overpowered, a quick "bum dip" or hand drag will slow you down.

^^^ What they said

I have never been a fan of bearing off downwind, as that can result in things going faster instead of slower!

Thanks all for your tips - a few things for me to think about next time. I try to keep my body fairly straight with hips up...but I have to lean forward a bit to reach the bar when it's depowered...I think I have short arms so I might adjust the North rigging system and bring it a bit closer to the hook.

Cheers!

+1 to all of above.

Forget downwind, edge harder with kite low as you can get it. It can be hard work but just keep pushing more water and head further upwind to try to kill the power and get the kite closer to the edge of the window.

Also make sure your harness is not around your armpits, a low harness point will also assist.

If you still get pulled, then a smaller kite and possibly smaller board will be needed. Big boards do make it hard to edge and increase the skipping you mentioned.

I find it easier in a big prolonged gust (say 30 seconds to 2 minutes) to whack the kite up high at say 11 or so. Seems to hold less power there then I just hang on for the ride.

Sometimes I put it to 12 and pull the bar in. That is the best fun ever

Not sure about the bearing off downwind advice...you will gain a lot of speed and the faster you go the harder it will be to edge. If that happens leave your kite up high until you slow down then edge hard upwind then get your kite low. Edge as hard as you can this will keep your speed under control.

If you don't edge hard enough you will career downwind out of control like you said skimming on top of the waves often ending in a spectacular wipeout. This happened to me a lot while I was learning as where I ride is very gusty. Also if you see a big gust coming you can always just pull in the depower strap if you are having problems.
