Hello all, I recently became a member of an online community that specialises in acquiring right of way. I recommend that any one participating in sailing sports should join as its good fun.

Lol.. Windsurfers do not have any righ away rules. They work on the kite boarder moves or die right away rules.

Whilst not all new kiters take lessons, right of way rules should be covered in more details in lessons - before people are let loose on the water. When this issue comes up in conversation, many kiters say it was never covered. The link Windreams provided is a good summary, but a couple of the diagrams are a little unclear.

I got a bit slack with the previous post as I was rushing out the door. I’m a visual person so when I was being told about right of way rules I couldn’t picture what they were trying to explain but once I come across this web site it made it all look so simple. There's also a good "right of way" video in the link.

Point 3 is a little dodgy. The "downwind" rider has his kite upwind of himself.

Is this a trick I've not yet learnt.

A good general guide but in real life...

1. Wankers who stand on the beach admiring how well their kite sits at zenith for 30 minutes lose any kind of right of way.
2. Ho ho ho.
3. This necessitates at least one rider figuring out who will be downwind when the kites cross... Que a game of chicken.
4. This usually decends into rule 3 -- who rides square to the wind?,
5. People get huffy about this, as no matter how much space you give them, they consider it dangerous because ixnay on rule 2.
6. Should be rephrased "the rider on the directional assumes right of way by refusing to acknowledge rule 2 before gybing; a three inch swell is of course considered a wave."

I prefer the Bill and Ted rule of sailing...

Mostly taken from the link;

7. Avoid collisions at all costs. Follow these rules but not to the point of having a collision, even if you have right of way you must act prudently to avoid an accident.Don't ever assume you have right of way or insist on taking it - the other kite surfer or vessel may not know the right of way rules, may lack the experience or skill to effectively manoeuvre out of the way, may not be looking or are simply an oxygen thief!

You didn't include the kite instructors with students standing in the same spot with their kites at zen teaching how to be a short tacker..and how not to look out for themselves having no knowledge of any basic rules. ..

I can see where they all derive from but with regards to 3, usually the windward boat keeps clear, so shouldn't it be the windward rider has to raise their kite?
Make even more sense if you imagine a windy day and not wanting to lower your kite due to the power, once again makes more sense for the windward rider to raise their kite

To say that wankers holding their kite at the zenith lose their right of way, yet I agree and also hate it when people do this particularly in narrow river where they hold their kite on the water while they stand in the sand having a good ol yarn.
BUT, its still your responsibility to find somewhere else to ride/avoid them. Sucks I know - more of a polite thing not to be the wanker really

When you say windward I’m assuming you mean the upwind rider. If that’s the case the description on #3 supports what you said but the person that drew #3 needs to get a different job as I does look opposite. I think the intent is correct, just a very bad drawing.
