Pretty much got jumping sorted so last session I decided to give backrolls a go!

So went out to a nice quite flat spot and did a small jump, edging hard and launched myself around the bar. Finished a rotation and was absolutely stoked until I kept spinning... managed to land a double backroll (first and last)

So next try I took it easy on the edging and spinning but i still managed to spin around like a well oiled double backroll machine proceeding to eat ****.

Gave it a few more shots with little success and after looping the kite gave up. It felt like the kite was gliding a lot so I had too much time in the air, even off tiny jumps. but when watching others it looks like they have heaps of control of their rotations.

Also any tips to get front lines untangled, kite has a twisty thingy but doesn't seem to do much. Been pulling front lines down and twisting them, but it takes ages.

tldr:
Any advice to just do one rotation?

Don't worry so much about the jump. Kick off on your back foot to get a bit of lift and provide your rotation, you don't have to throw your body into it much. Just carve upwind a bit to get your edge, (don't need too much speed) kick off with the back foot and look over your front shoulder. Don't pull your legs in, that will increase the spin, and try and not bar in too much if you have enough lift and rotation. You can do quick, low backrolls or ones with more pop and a slower rotation giving the look of more control during the trick. Like I said, the key is to not throw yourself into it too much, even if that means not rotating all the way around at first until you get the feel of it, better than over rotating, looping the kite, and smashing it.
In regard to the twisted lines; a few options. The best is to learn to do the same trick both ways, easier said than done at first. Very few swivels work as they're supposed to, even with regular lubrication. Until you're comfy both ways, you could always "pre twist" your lines a bit when setting up (obviously in the opposite way to how they twist when doing the trick). Be aware though that if lines are twisted too much, they can effect the kite handling slightly. Also, if twisted a lot, they can limit the effectiveness of your safety line.

Hi kevok,

The secret to controlling a backroll is to not "huck" the move. It sounds like you are hucking the move with regard to the take off.

A back roll is only partially initiated by the carving of the board upwind and shifting your weight back. Correct technique suggests that the back roll is started by ....

* Keeping your hands centred on the bar

* Turning your head on take off, to look over your upwind shoulder.

* Where your head goes, the body follows. This twists your shoulders and sets your body into correct position for the trick.

* Keep your head looking over your shoulder, as you rotate, your landing will come into view when you are about 1/2 way around. This will allow you to speed up, or slow down your rotation speed.

* Rotation speed is determined by whether you stay opened out or tuck your legs in tight. The more tucked you are, the faster you spin, and vice versa.

Adjust your height and rotation speed to allow a smooth landing and make sure you re-direct your kite forward BEFORE landing. You can adjust height by sheeting out the kite.

When you are in rotation, spot your landing and align the board with the direction of travel.

Land it! Claim it! Move on to the next trick!

Hope this helps,

DM

Just learned how to backroll landed my first few last week was so pumped...fkn so simple.. Just gotta be commited.

When doing it iv had the kite at 12 and pullin in on the bar and swing back hard. Would it be easier to try and start from 11 and bring it up to 12 and then swing round?

How do u guys do em?

around 11, spot a ramp, squat a little, push off, grab a rail for style. land..

once you've got the backrolls downpact try backroll transitions
