Really basic question: I know that the best winds for a beginner are cross shore or cross onshore, but not onshore and definitely NOT offshore. However when I look at the seabreeze chart and google maps I cannot tell which directions would be best for a beginner at Botany Bay in Sydney.

My understanding is:
South easterlies / South Westerlies = bad
North easterlies / North Westerlies = good

From google maps it looks like easterlies would blow you straight back into the bay also, making them good too. Can someone please confirm this is correct?

Also, if there are any newbie buddies / groups that kitesurf at Botany Bay when conditions are suitable on Saturdays or Sundays please let me know. I am at the can body drag / cannot stand on board phase

Cheers

Westerly winds (or anything with west in it) in nsw are generally all bad. Check out NSWKBA website for different wind and locations, within Botany Bay.

Other winds are all fine just find the right location

^^^ What kyteryder said

"ideal" is summer time, when the wind is north-easterly

Can someone please hit the fast forward button so we can get to summer already?

actually, I am enjoying my first winter kiting after a very marginal summer. The cold and gusty conditions meant that I was on my own most of the time and really improved my skills in the waves. We have had some great southerlies and not too bad westerlies, all of which are kiteable around my area. The isolation that winter brings is both a little scary, but also one that keeps me so stoked...me, the ocean, the wind, and sea eagles cruizing around my kite checking me out. That and the odd dolphin that pop up to scare the poop out of me ensures me that my adrenaline still works!

As a regular kiter on Botany Bay here are the winds

Dolls Point -
North east wind if the tide is running out
South west to South east is fine if the tide is running in

Further north around the bay
Any wind from North east to South east is fine on any tide.

Kurnell is always stronger in the north easterlies. You can also kite here in west/north westerly over winter but they are gusty.

Hi Nooby, I am also new to kiteboarding and have just bought my first set of gear. I live in Sydney and need someone to go riding/have a laugh with.

Would be good to tee up a couple of weekend sorties to Botany.
