Anyone have equipment insurance, particularly when travelling?
I've got the AKSA insurance but about to travel and looking at my gear when in hire cars, in the hands of Qantas etc
TIA

Should be able to insure through your home and contents. I say this not having looked into the travel option though.

You got me thinking so I had a look at my house and contents insurance and kiting gear would be covered if stolen in OZ or NZ but there was a few rules one being it would need to had been locked up, so in a car would be ok but on the beach would be my bad luck.

Without checking I’d say travel insurance would cover theft anywhere else in the world. The one I’ve never thought about is loss of gear in domestic travel while in the hands of the flight company. I assume it would be covered if you had travel insurance but I never take out travel insurance for domestic travel... Let us know if you find out the answer...

I cant remember what company it was but I did hear somewhere that some insurance companies wont cover kites under home and contents. It has some fancy word for it. Recreational sailing material or somthing like that. Worth a call to make sure your home and contents covers your beloved kites.

There is no such thing as insurance that will cover your gear left unattended on the beach, or in use. Maybe some full on yachting insurance but no travel insurance and no contents insurance will cover you. All insurance policies have clauses about your "duty of care" and some exclusion about sporting equipment while in use.

The simplest thing to do is make sure you have extra cover for your stuff outside your home, then take reasonable care of your stuff while you're travelling or using it. It's not hard.

Most policies have a limit per item and total amount limit. Mine is $1000 per item and $10,000 total. That's heaps for each kite or my mountain bike or other stuff I use each day or take away on holiday.

I used to take out additional cover on things when I travel overseas but I stopped doing that. When you consider that each item depreciates to zero over 2-3 years then it only makes financial sense to individually insure really expensive, really new things. Otherwise the value you get back in an insurance claim is hugely cancelled out by the cost of insurance.

I always take out travel insurance as soon as I book a trip if it includes airfares or other pre-payments more than a few hundred dollars. You can get insurance for $50-60 that covers a domestic trip. If you have to cancel the trip for any significant reason then the insurance will refund your money. If you don't have insurance then you rely on the good will of the airlines and accommodation providers.

Virgin don't refund, they give credits and the credits run out in 12 months. You can work around the 12 month thing but it's a pain.
