Went out today and there wasn't much wind at launch spot. Kite fell out of the sky and inverted, then it appeared to almost fix itelf. I tried to straighten the lines out but couldn't work out which way to twist the lines. Kite seemed to take itself to the edge of the window where i thought i had control (kinda like when dudes twist their lines when doing tricks-but obviously not) i launched it only for it to spiral into a death loop, after pulling the safety and subsequentlly soiling myself - cause that didnt work, i grabbed some centrelines and depowered the thing. If i was out any further i would have been in a longdrop load more trouble. If you invert what's best practice to get out of the situation?

I have 0 experience with this but had same situation 1 time. Marginal wind, fell from the sky on its butt and pulling me slightly. I too grabbed center lines (after safety) to lessen the pull and while keeping it that way, untwisted the lines (it was just 1 rotation). Just pulled the steering lines with 1 hand till i saw 90% of it and figured which 1 is which. Rest, like u said it, was just automatic, went itself on the edge after u "force" 1 steering line.

Johnny, next time find a better spot!

I'm assuming u were at loders, wind was s/se,,,,bad wind shadow and gusty as farq!

If ur kite was just inverted (which it sounds like it wasn't) u can usually still fly it and body drag carefully back to the beach, land and correct it.

Yeh thanks for the comments and vid- unfortunately there was no beach and given my mediocre kite skills i thought i think I'll abort in the water for now. It was at kfc -after 35minutes of untangling lines the wind went a little more east in it and was fun

JohnnyMack,

Inversions can take different shapes or forms and as a result lead to various problems.

On the other hand death loops can only be caused by variation in your line lengths, for example if one of your back line is longer than the other or even if one of your front line is shorter than the other. This can also be caused by a bridle getting tangled around the wing tip or around the kite for example.

As a newbie, the best practice to recover from an inversion is to release the safety system and get to your kite, self-rescue and sort it out on the beach. When you get more advanced, you'll figure out ways to recover from it, either by using your safety system (best practice IMO) or not (much more dangerous). If you haven't yet done a self-rescue I suggest making this your top priority skill to master.

The biggest issue with kite inversions is that people very rarely use the safety system, which often causes the kite to fly inverted / out of control. If the kite starts to spin, after a few loops, you may jam your safety system and render the safety system useless. So once again the key is to release the safety as soon as this happens. Soon you'll be able to reassemble your safety and relaunch the kite quickly when this happens.

If your lines are simply crossed (typical problem after an inversion), it's not enough to send your kite into a loop and you will be able to fly it back to the shore. Don't try to fix those crossed lines in the water unless you're a pro and willing to risk loosing your kite.

Also, if your safety system is connected to more than 1 line, i.e. dual front line safety system, this may not help in solving your problem and rescuing yourself.

So in summary, if you release the safety system very early (as soon as you invert the kite) and you are using a single front line safety system your chances to recover from it are very high

PS: watch out for bad/ very gusty winds, they are dangerous, especially for newbies...

Thanks Christian - yeh i sort of froze and then it was all too late when i released the safety- which did sweet fa. Youre right -think the bridle hooked around the kite where the lines were different lengths- bit more practice and watching video tutes and I'll be better prepared for next time
