Hi

I am a beginner and just about to buy some gear off a kitesurf school where they offer to refund the price of the lessons ($550 for 6 hours) if you buy a new complete set up.

I can't find the cost of the items online so was wondering if anyone can tell me if this is a good deal:

- F-One Volt 9m kite (2011 but new)
- Nobile T5 board (2013)
- Underwave Imperial harness

So they are saying the gear is $2750 (or effectively $2200 with the 550 off).

Does this seem reasonable?

Thanks

Based on reading this forum, and my own personal experience learning to kitesurf, I would advise against getting an expensive brand new setup.

Check out gumtree and you'll find plenty of people selling complete kits for pretty cheap.

HI Giles. Though the volt is new, it is a 2011. What you need to know is whether it's a 2011 model i.e came out sept 2010, or is it a 2011 build i.e 2012 model? Bare in mind that the kites that came out in the last quarter of 2012 are known as 2013 kites. As an example, I bought a 2012 new Naish Park just after the 2013's came out a few months back. RRP is 2200, I paid $1200, though that was a bargain. Nobile are a good board and you could expect to pay around $900 for a new 2013 T5. RRP on the harness is $249.
Biggest question surrounds the kite itself, you need to know a bit more. If you've already had the lessons and want to use the discount, I'd suggest asking about a a 2013 kite. If they say the package is worth $2750, I'd say they've discounted the kite to $1600, $900 for the board and $250 for the harness. If it's a 2012 kite (1 yr old) they can do better, as you can see by what I paid for the Naish. If it's a 2011 kite (2 yrs old) they can do much better and will be desperate to shift it. Sounds to me like they can do the $2200 price regardless of the lessons, if it's a 1 yr old kite.
I expect I could get slagged for this, but that's my 2 bob's worth.
PM me if you have any more q's.

Or you could also consider Switch. I went the 11m Element - $980 for kite and bar. Then went to the kite shop for 2nd hand Cabrinha TT (149cm) board for $299, new waist harness for $99, new vest for $135

Set up for under $1600

I got a switch blade 14m 09 great condition and harness boards all for about 1200, good thing too I ripped the **** out of my kite when a wave hit it, I was disappointed however was glade my kite wasn't a 1000 bucks it was 500ish so it could have been worst. Suggestion would be do some research on second hand gear, and what also suggest is ask many questions about the kite to the person who's selling the kite

Cheers for the replies.

I didn't really think that as a beginner I would just end up destroying a nice, new kite!

Has anyone bought second hand from any schools in Perth? I feel that it might be more rfeliable than off gumtree or ebay especially as I would not really know what the signs of a kite that's had it are.

Hey Giles,

There are plenty of topics about buying 2nd hand on this site, use google for a quick search. I also think Laurie has posted some guides to buying 2nd hand in the the news/articles on the home page;

www.seabreeze.com.au/Articles/Kitesurfing/Summary.aspx

Few basic things to look for/ask when buying 2nd hand;

- If possible its better to see the kite in person (rather than buy online - tho reputable shops might be alright if you know what you're after)
- Any repairs to the kite (and who fixed them)
- Wear on bridles/lines/pullies
- Bar (make sure they aren't damaged, worn)
- Safety/quick release works

Hope this helps!

$2750 seems a bit lofty to this kook.

An awesome mate of mine gave me a 12m Switchblade to start my quiver, but 'cause I'm a cashed up bogan surfer immigrant I went and purchased:

- 8m 2012 Switchblade $1000 (ex team kite - but fine for kooks like us)
- 136 Xenon Infra $400 (http://www.xe54shop.com/product/8,infra.html)
- Mystic harness $275 (www.mysticboarding.com/products/men/kite-harnesses/product.php?pid=1339)

Put $1675 on the VISA ... but felt great about the quality of kit and the spend

Ring the crew at Kitepower - that's where I got hooked up.

M8, that's a good price considering the cost of that board.
But as a learner you just want a massive TT that will have you spending more time above the surface than below it. $550 is pretty good price for lessons but, is that 3 x 3hrs?
Before comitting, go see the lads at kite addiction. I buy a bit of stuff off them and they have some great tough 2nd hand gear at good prices. Gaastra is very strong kit and they have loads of it cheap.
Good luck.
Oh and - get a seat harness to learn on, this one bit of kit will make your learning 5 times more easy.
