Hey guys - brand new to this forum and kiting as well...:)..Long story short, I need to buy gear here in the US to take w/ me to Costa Rica this fall so my buddy can start me w/ lessons. He is an experienced kite instructor, but I want to have my own gear to use after the lessons while I'm living down there for 6 months...

I'm 6'4" 245 lbs (111 kilos), 37 years old, good athlete, strong surfing / sup background, have never kiteboarded before except for a few months on a 3 meter training kite on land.

I'm leaning toward the 2014 Cab Switchblade 14 meter. It seems like it will be a good all around kite that will be ok for light wind days (10 knots) on the SUP and then get me on a kiteboard (Naish Hero 135 possibly) on a bit windier days....

Is this the right kite for me? any board suggestions?

Thanks for the help... happy to be here!!

Congrats on the trip! You will love it.

The Cab Switchy is definitely a great choice, especially for beginners. Very floaty, easy to control, slower than others but that's good for beginners, and excellent depower and control.

14m is probably too big for you especially if winds pick up above 16knots. Check were you're going and study the average winds throughout the year and possible gusts. Last thing you need is windy days with a kite that's way too big.

I weigh 80kg and I have an older Switchblade (also 14mt) and found it a very easy to kite and control. Has great loft and jumping potential, so you have to pick the right days. If it's over 18knots, I would avoid even with your weight.

Consider two kites at least - 12mt and the 14mt, even a third 10mt for those windy days over 22knots. And if you lose weight, the kites become even more powerful. So be careful.

I would go for a slightly bigger board though being a beginner - around 140, 142.

Where in Costa are you going? In the Guanacaste region, when the Papagayo winds start in December, a 14 will be too big, even for a big guy like you. I'd take a smaller kite as well. 10/11m. Take a TT kiteboard as there are heaps of old surfboard lying around to ride if the wind is light, but no kite shops, when I lived there a few years ago. Awesome country.....enjoy.

Thanks Guys - yes, we will be in Guanacaste, I'm sure the papagayos will be firing as well.... I've spent a couple months of winters in Playa Langosta for the past couple years... I will bring a TT for sure...

What do you guys think the usable wind range for my weight (111 kilos), will be w/ the 14M Switchblade for a TT ? Once again, I'm brand new to kiting... thanks

Most of the winds will be off shore at that time, so you will be limited in where you can kite. I lived in Playa Flamingo and the wind was swirly and gusty in the bay there because it is coming off the mountains. In Bahia Salinas you will get straighter wind but it blows it's tits off. I reckon you will be able to kite 15-20kns with a 14/TT combo. May be a little more??? I'm 90kg's and drop my 14 at 18-20kns.

Just bought a naish hero , and I am a beginner about your size at 95 kg and it's the best board I have come across in my limited experience. I took a 14 m draft out for a run today thinking it would be 10-15 knots , turned out to be 15-20 , and I got my arse kicked . So be cautious what you buy . Loftywinds is on the money there !
