Had a pretty good day today. Nice and crappy south easterly came through around 16-24 knots which was pretty good fun around the Maroochy river mouth. The wind picked up the odd perfect size wave with a nice drawn out face that you could really get stuck into. After an hour or two the wind started gusting too much, causing the odd embaressing moment where you are without power just before a cresting wave is about to bitch slap you on the way out through the break.
So I packed it up and headed around to Kawana beach where I thought the wind would probably suffer less from all the concrete wind breaks. As expected the wind was a lot more consistent but the sea state was pretty ordinary with waves going two ways. Proceeded to dutifully mow the lawn, playing in the waves, when I got that feeling that I should probably pack it in. Just soft more than anything, lack of consistant exposure due to the lack of wind.
So I'm doing my devient in the dunes routine, rolling up my kite when I see a group of three kiters come through. Most of them look pretty tired, just pulling direct downwind trying to keep out of trouble. Ah well, it's a long way from Curramundi, been there experienced that. Looks like some nice sets are going to waste though. Go back to the kite and start rolling it up when a single kite appears upwind. He's on some bastard snub nosed surfboard with maybe a Naish or something.
At any rate from the moment this guy comes into view until he's lost in the waves downwind, he's relentlessly smacking every lip that dares shows its face. To the point where you would see a wave rear up in front of him and you'd break out the popcorn wondering what he'd do with this one! At that point I knew the sport had a ton more in store and that if you're not having a proper go, you're probably wasting your time.. Thanks for sharing the stoke fellow loner dude
