Hi Seabreeze,

First Post! :D

Anyway I've recently completed my first lesson in and had a blast, I even got going for a small distance but was having trouble keeping the power on. I'm having trouble deciding on which gear would be best for me, my lesson instructor is recommending me a 2010 Ozone Zephyr 17 and a friend of mine who used to be an instructor and now an avid enthusiast is recommending I don't go bigger than 14m. I weigh 120kg and am 6'6 so I'm quite a big guy, I'm very interested to hear some more opinions of riders that have gone through this situation. I'm leaning towards the zephyr to learn and get confident as a beginner then maybe when I'm ready getting a 14m for the bigger wind speeds.

What are your thoughts Seabreeze?

Thanks
Rillis

EDIT: Kiting in SEQ, Redlands area

Hi Rillis,

As a big boy of 120kg, a Zephyr wouldn't be a bad choice for you. Using my rule of thumb of 1 square meter of kite for every 10kg of rifder weight, you can calculate the approximate surface area required. This is a generic rule and lots of things can change it so use it as a guide only!

The average 10m kite is made for 15-25 knots for a rider of 80 kilos, this means at 120kg you'd need a 14m kite to tackle the average wind speed of 20 knots. As QLD is less windy than WA and has less ooomffff per knot of wind speed (air density and temp), then you can safely use a 17m Zephyr to cover that range.

I'm about 90 kilo and can hold a Zephyr in 20 knots on a twin tip without any problems. For maximum water time, get yourself a Zeph and a large board of around 144 x 44 and learn in the 13-18 knots wind range. It will be easy and fun on the Zeph as it's stable and easy.

Cheers,

DM

Hi Rillis

Can be a little confusing cant it? I recently was asking the same question a few months ago when I was buying my gear. I'm about 110kg, in Brisbane area, kite at Sandgate, Gold Coast & Sunshine Coast.
I found there were 2 trains of thought, particularly if you are only starting out and having just the one kite (as I do).

a) bigger kite, but you will most likely get kicked off the water quicker if the wind picks up.
b) smaller kite, with maybe 2 boards (one a dedicated light wind board).

I went with option b) and purchased a 12m Cab Switchy instead of the 14m, based on advice from my instructor and a few others here on SB.
I have to say, so far so good and I believe it was the right decision.
While learning, I have found most of the time to have enough power on my 12m and in some cases overpowered.....more so than being underpowered.
Obviously conditions are the determining factor, but technique has a lot to do with it, and edging hard to hold down the power essential. My normal stance is fine, but I'm still trying to master edging hard while riding switch. Generally I have found my 12m to have more than enough power while progressing through these early stages of the learning curve, and think I may have struggled at times with the power on a 14m. Unless of course its light in which case, not many kiters are out anyway. I have never flown a Zeph, so cant comment and similarly I have yet to buy a dedicated light wind board for the lighter days, so cant comment how much difference that will make either.....thats the next purchase currently my one and only board is a Slingshot SX 143cm.

My only advice is, wait till your finished all of your lessons before purchasing, talk to as many people in the meantime as you can, check out the sizes of kites being ridden at your local, particularly by us "bigger guys". Get out there have fun, stay safe, its addictive and no doubt (just like me) you'll be thinking about expanding your quiver ASAP anyway

I reckon the Zeph is a good choice for you. You should be able to hold it down til 20 knots or so. They loop well and excellent relaunch.

The next kite you buy could be an 11m for the stronger wind days.

We have a customer who weighs around 115kg, he can kite with the Zephyr as his main kite, and gets approx 16-28knots wind range with it. He uses a 1.46 x 44 board too and rides it in that wind range. You should net get anything smaller than a 14M and a similar size board in my opinion.

11m in SEQ? I'm 85kg and have used my 9m twice this season and last season I was using my 14m more often.

I'm sure after one lesson Rillis will be pleased the to know the Zephyr loops well

Go for the zeph, your no lightweight,if the wind is predominantly in the 12-20 knot range then your gonna need it,have ridden the 011 zeph and its a nice soft 17 thats really predictable, would combine it with a 140x42 min for the same windrange.
